M70 Review

I got my Precision M70 on monday of this week and have been playing with it non-stop since then.

My first impression when I got this thing was WHOA! The lid of the screen has Precision written out and I gotta say that this is pretty tight. Cosmettically (sp?) the thing was beautiful. When the lid is closed, you can see the battery charging, power, and activity LEDs, and when opened, up at the top there is the main panel with sound controls and LEDs for wifi, bluetooth, and all the locks. The sound controls are a great help. The laptop I had before this had the FN ones and they sucked. The keyboard for me is awesome, very responsive and while it takes a little force to push a kye, once you strike it you know you have.

I got this thing with a 2.0Ghz P/M, 1Gb of 533Mhz RAM, the Quadro Vid Card, and all the other nuts and bolts. When I turned it on the first time I hit F2 to enter the BIOS. It's very nicely laid out and there's a menu on the left with everything that you could need. The computer booted very quickly and I was happy to see that there wasn't the normal crap on the laptop that seems to come standard with a new one. My friend got a 9300 at the same time (screen is frickin huge) and he had all sorts of crap on there. I went straight to trying to figure out how this thing did, so I installed BF 1942 which everyone knows is a memory hog, and the game ran beautifully with all graphics on high. Next test was MOH: Pacific Assault, a game that can be a little choppy on my desktop with a X800 Pro installed. Needless to say, it crushed this too. Graphics were awesome and it ran very smoothly. After that I took off the kiddie gloves and threw in Half Life 2, a game that is supposedly optimized for ATI hardware. At 1024x768 with all graphics on high but no AA or AF, the game ran fine but something didn't seem right so I punched the graphics back down to medium for most. I'm in ravenholm now and I am crapping my pants. Everything is awesome.

I believe this concludes my review. If anyone has any questions, post them on here or pm me. Thanks, and have a nice day.

Oh, and BTW, I GET TO FRICKIN GRADUATE TOMORROW. No more public school system.

coolbits is your friend; the quadro comes severly underclocked, it's an exact 6800 .. clock it like one.

search for bechmarks of OC's etc. i run HL2 on high w/ AA and it's smooth w/ a moderate OC

congrat's on school and your M70

Maybe some of you M70 owners can help me. I got one a few weeks ago - 2ghz, 1g, WUXGA, and the graphics quality in some aspects is awfull. I got it for running Solidworks CAD software on, which needs to open GL graphics. In that application it works great, but simple graphic images on websites are stair-stepped and fuzzy. For instance, on the DELL homepage the E in the Dell logo is made up of 4-5 stairs and the "USA" next to it has a half mm of fuzz at the edges. I'm not being a little pickey here, this is the worst diplay of those images I see on any computer I've compared it to and really the worst I've seen ever.

I called Dell about it and they were perplexed and sent me another one, which is the same. Do I have two lemons sitting on my desk, or just need to tweek something? All settings of screen resolution produce the same results.

All help appreciated.

Easy fix....just use firefox instead.

Unfortunatly dell sent out another laptop for no reason. Also if you search for IE or internet explorer or something a thread will show you step by step how to fix it.

A little reading goes a long way.

Relax guy, any idea what the webpage is exactly? AND I Graduated today. Fun stuff. After the first 100 kids, reading off the names and clapping gets a little boring. PPAZUS, is coolbits better than rivatuner? I went to rivatuner and the clock and mem were set way down. What do you have urs at?

Ok, thanks. Googled yesterday and came up with the exact same link. Problem fixed, and the cool thing now is that this resolution looks like what its supposed to instead of 1024x768. Such a cool laptop

hey guys I hope you can help me here.
I'm trying to decide to get Sager 9880 or this famous M70. People often say that when getting m70 I aslo should get another desktop workstation to do rendering but it's not an option for me because I travel quite a lot and need to be mobile as much as possible. I don't know why but I'm really into m70. The problem with Sager is that it's really heavy, loud and there are problems with heat. Now about m70 the thing that bothers me is it's performance when for example doing rendering and the same time surfing the web or watching movie. Is it possible (Pentium M doesn't have HT so I guess this must be a problem, right?) I hope you got decent desktop workstation and could compare it with m70, somehow for me. Thank you in advance for any help in that matter.

hey lukx...

i was in the same boat as you... but i am now the proud owner of an M70. I use it almost exclusively for running Maya, and it is a dream to work with. This thing at 7 or so pounds is heavy enough... Im glad i didnt go with the sager. As for rendering... its fast enough!

Late reply to the thread, but I own the M60 for a similar situation (ME student).
