These are based on the Catalyst 5.6, which are showing large improvements. I think this is the first time any mobility drivers are better than the Omegas!!

Sorry for the noob question but could somebody please explain me what is the point of ATI Catalyst drivers.

I tried to read ATI's website but it didn't really make sense.
they're drivers plus various software bundled with it for your ati video card

karma: i think you linked to the desktop catalyst drivers, not the mobility ones

@bveld - Catalyst drivers are just updated drivers for your ATI graphics card...each new version usually (supposedly) offers better performance and bug fixes. This is a big deal because typically the official drivers (either from NVIDIA or ATI) have not supported the cards in notebooks, leading many users to install modified drivers, now they have the option of using official versions.

They are the software drivers for notebooks with ATi video chips.

This part I find very interesting:

Quote:
In June 2005, ATI commissioned AppLabs, a leading provider of quality assurance and testing, to conduct the test, pitting ATI's Radeon® display adaptors against comparable NVIDIA GeForce products. The objective of the test was to perform advanced software stress testing of the Radeon product line against the GeForce product line. AppLabs used publicly available test applications extracted from Microsoft's latest Windows Hardware Quality Lab test suite 5.3 to conduct the study in its Lindon, Utah facility. Testing was conducted on a variety of graphics adaptors from each of the two manufacturers, and included the repeated execution of a multitude of test cases (for more than 500 times on each card) to mimic a typical, long term, real-world PC usability scenario.

In this series of independent trials, ATI consistently earned higher stability rankings, scoring as high as 8.6 percent above NVIDIA. The AppLabs report concluded: "Based on the results of these software stress tests, the stability of the ATI Catalyst software exceeded that of their NVIDIA counterpart."
I never thought ATi would commission a different company for stability testing, but....*shrug*

Apparently the Mobility Drivers are only good for those with an X700 or X800 in their notebook. 9700 out of luck?

Knowledge Base

They also released a small program that lets users find out whether their notebook is compatible with the offical drivers, too.

Thanks for the info. The notebook I will be getting (LG LM70) has only X600. Does this mean I have to stick to Omega drivers?

They are unified drivers. So, all anyone has to do is download the Catalyst 5.6 and install:

From what ATi has said, they will be including the other notebook chips in later revisions. So for now, yeah, stick with the Omegas.

Reading the review it shows some nice improvements over the 5.5's, expecially in Doom3, Chronicles of Riddick, Halo PC, and 3DMark'05.

Well, SWEET! Do you know if it has the Control Center? I'm at work but will jump on my 7620 when I get home...

If you download this suite of drivers but your laptop maker is not in on this program, then the drivers will let you know that you cannot install them on your laptop. Instead, you’ll be advised to use the drivers provided by your laptop manufacturer.
