Remove the Intel Pro Wireless apps, just leaving the driver?
That could save you what, 4 processes?

I've got around 27-28 procs running. When gaming I can get it down to around 18.

To zx81

You dont need incredimail, logitech camera, quicktime, dell quickset, intel prowireless(let windows handle wireless it does a better job and will get rid of 4 or 5 processes. My point was that many of these programs dont need to be running constantly. You can just double click on an icon when you need them.

Off hand I always recommend re-installing windows, starts you out with the basics. You can disable the ones you dont need, then from there you can only install what you need and disable anything else. There is no problem with computer tweaking as long as you use your head and take your time, people who rush in and disable everything should have left their computer in the first place. And there's also safe mode for those who really screw up

i'm not a gamer... i have a ton of software that i run... i do use WinTasks Pro to let me know what's goin' on... but it's typical for me to have Outlook, Word, 6-12 browser windows, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, TopStyle Pro, etc. runnin'... i care about performance... some of the images i work with in Photoshop are > 10 GB... i also have 3 500 GB Lacie Big Extreme Firewire 800 ext HDD's... so lookin' at the number of processes isn't that important but i do chk 'em...

it's the real world performance that counts... computers are tools of the trade for me...

some of the posts i read remind me of anal-retentive programmers that talk about how tight they can get a given routine to run... i come from the IBM mainframe world where the apps we write have millions of lines of code... IBM cares a hellava lot more about code that's solid, modular and most important, well documented... obviously some routines have to be super optimized but they are the very rare exception...

Whats more important to my mind is how much ram is being eaten up by your system when you bootup.

After bootup and before launching any apps myself, my system is already at 298mb of ram usage.

My desktop PC is only at 112mb...

I like to game and I plan to use my laptop for gaming, email, a little spreadsheet work, ssh, ftp, and some of the media center stuff.

I just recieved my xps in the mail the other day and have had barely any time to play with it. But I gotta say I was shocked to boot it up and wait a minute for it to load up and then see that nearly 300mb of ram was eaten up already and I had a system tray chock FULL of icons. And not to mention the annoying dell popups, mass amounts of free trial software that expire in 30-60 days and so on.

I tried uninstalling norton (I prefer another av prog) and after removing the only two options in my add/remove programs utility, norton still launches

As I only had 20-30 mins to play with the laptop so far, I haven't actually dug around too deeply into it. But my initial gut instinct was a full re-install and I am pretty sure I'll be doing one... besides losing all the *free* 30-60 day trial software, any reason I shouldn't re-install the media center XP OS dell provided me?
