Ok so maybe this is a bit off topic but I like asking people I know has a clue

Basically I'm looking for alternatives to the likes of Norton, McAfee, Nero.. are there any free or shareware programs out there that do a good enough job?

Oh and while I'm at it, what's your opinions on the included CyberLink PowerDVD? Is it any good or are there better alternatives out there?

For anti-virus: AVG or avast. I use AVG.

Both AVG and Avast are good anti-virus alternatives. I personally prefer Avast. For DVD different tools are good for different things. It really depends on what you want to do with your DVD burner?

Maybe I can help you save some of the trouble.

Cyberlink versus WinDVD, Cyberlink will do the job and it's pretty good. I did ask this question before too..

Nero for burning softwares.

Well, more than anything I'll be burning backups of software.. ie, using the DVD media as long-term storage. I'm also bound to burn the occasional image of course (both CD+DVD) aswell as burning MP3's and making my own music CD's (regular music cd's, ie .wav format files). All normal uses I guess? I'm used to Nero by the way, it was the program I used on my old desktop.

I'll have a quick look at both AVG and Avast...

From what you decribed for DVD burning Nero is really your best bet. It can't do everything but I think it can do everthing you described. The only thing Nero really can't do is "backup" DVD's. I really don't want to start that discussion though.
