i have the same "problem"....i'm only getting a max of 6x no matter what kind of media i use..i updated the firmware about 2 months ago and was told that it would fix the problem. Well, it hasn't and i just live with the 6x burning speed right now.....

I tried Memorex bundled dvd-r certified 8x = max 6x.
Memorex jewelled packages dvd-r certified 8x = max 8x

What the hell ??

Next step i will try 16x certified media

Its all with the media you need to find out what media is compatible with the burner to do the full speed!

I have found that the Fuji Film 8X DVD+R media works at 8X for both the Sony and NEC drive. These are re-badged Taiyo Yudens and you can get them on sale at Best Buy once in a while for $19.99 a 50-pack.

This is unconfirmed by statistics, but--I was browsing some dvd-r retailing sites to order some new 8x dvds. A few of the sites mentioned that although the media's stated max is 8x, some drives are not REALLY able to write that fast because the data can't be transferred quick enough.

Even though they're branded at 8x, they may max at 6x because the max transfer speeds are so close to the 8x write speeds that you computer may lag a moment for whatever reason--and that split-second of a transfer rate drop (dropping beneath the writing rate) will start corrupting data and render parts of the disc useless.

I'm using NERO 6 ULTRA EDITION 6.6.0.12 with the NEC 6500a on my 9300.

It shows burning at 8x with a drop menu option of 8x also.

As far as what DVD's I use: Sony DVD+R up to 8x
