How fast is a Pentium M compared to a regular Pentium 4?

Hey everyone,
I tried searching but found no results, so I apologize if this is a redundant question

Anyhoo, I'm looking into replacing my Inspiron 5150. It has a 3.06Ghz P4 chip. I noticed there is a huge price difference between the Pentium M 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 GHz processors. I'm very happy with the performance of my current laptop, but it is, as expected, too heavy and very noisy when doing CPU-intensive tasks.

So, long story short, which Pentium M processor would give me the closest in the performance I get with a 3.06 P4 chip? I'm aware that other factors such as RAM speed, hard drive speed, etc. will affect that.

Thanks!
Kirupa

i THINK you multiply the pentium M processor speed by 1.7 to get an equivalent pentium 4 speed...

prolly the 1.8 will give ~3.0 Ghz in most things save processor intensive math like Video Encoding (where it will be a little slower). The PM is an overperforming little chip.

Get an M if you want to game.

By searching for "Pentium vs Centrino" you get some useful info in many threads. Try these:

pentium M 755 is equivalent to a P4 3.2 and a pentium M 745 is equivalent to a P4 2.8

pentium m

If you don`t care about battery life, the bigger the processor the better, but i`m running the new dell 17 widescreen it`s f@%kin awesome, and nothing comes close!!!!!!!!!!!!!

M is better for gaming, P4 is hotter but is better at bigger applications.

Pretty much everything you want to know on the subject.

As I understand it the P-M 2.0GHz = P4 3.2GHz and the P-M 2.13GHz = P4 3.4GHz. These are aproximations but pretty close. The upcoming P-M 2.26GHz should be close to the P4 3.8.

If that helps any.
