Wireless Range Boost?

Thread Starter
Is there a device that can extend the wireless range of my laptop (Dell 9300)? There is a free wireless router that I can log onto outside my building but not from inside and I think if I had an extra 200ft or so range I could snag it but I don't know if some kind of antenna or booster exists...

You could reach it, but can it reach you?

wouldn't an antenna boost the signal for both sending and recieving?

you would probably have to boost both your transmission and the transmission of the router

only for external detachable attennae. Newegg has them under wireless networking accessories. but you would have to change out the antenna on the router. could try a usb wireless device with an extension cable, set it by a window or door or whatever direction is closer. that helped me

Yes, the antenna's gain factor works both ways. Both TX & RX will see the same amount of gain.

damn that sucks, there would be no way to boost the other router as I'm trying to steal the signal. oh well, maybe I'll knock on some of my neighbors doors and see if one of the secured networks in my building will let me join in for a few bucks a month.

well according to somms you will be able to have a broader receive range thus putting your 'weaker' router's signal within the now larger radius of your antenna; so this should work, right?

someone told me that just having a 15dbi external attenna sitting by yoiur lappy, unpluged, will help the signal, but i have not noticed that with the one that i bought. That 15dbi attenna worked wonders for my desktop pci card. Most stock antennae are 2dbi, i think

I steal wireless dsl from my neighboor, woot to people who are unaware of WEP!!

Some other user (ranger something somethign..) gave me this link for an external mini-pci omnidirectional antenna:

But I would rather build a stronger directional cantenna using U.FL to n-type cable:

If you have the WRT.. linksys router you can also use it as a wireless adapter by placing it in an area where you get the signal and run an ethernet cable to the laptop

WEP & WPA are supposedly hackable...WPA2 seems secure for the moment.
