Would the plug be the same for Dell UXGA and XGA+ displays?..enable one to install a Sony UXGA in a 9300 XGA+.

An educated guess: the plug would be the same since someone mentioned earlier that the panels use a standard VESA connector, and of course the video card plug would have to be the same...

Can anyone point to the following ? I am willing to try this out.

- Stores that carry the Sony Laptops with the WUXGA 17" X-Brite (& which model) - Hopefully 30 day return policy. (15 might be a little tight but doable).

- Service Manual / Link for the 'said' Sony Laptop.

- Service Manual / Link for the Dell 9300 ( I think I have a link to this somewhere.. can find it if you cant post.. but if you can put all together in a "post" that would be great). I am willing to do the ground work.

Circuit City and BestBuy both have 15 day return policy with a 15% restocking fee. (unless defective and/or exchanged for store credit)

Your best bet is CompUSA with a 21 day return policy and no restocking fee.
Double check before you buy.

All Sony A-series have 17" X-Brite screen. WUXGA is optional. So be sure to check before you buy.
I can't seem to view the users guide for it . But it should be
here

I wait in anticipation for your results.

Is this practical?

How much would the whole process cost?

Where do you get the parts?
BEWARE:

Did a little research myself. The Sony WUXGA has two bulbs, and what I heard from a vendor is it has 2 wires that need to be plugged into power. Instead of one. I'd love to find out how someone gets around this.

Will shortly get my hands on a Sharp LQ170M1LA04 LCD (the Sony 17" UXGA screen) from computer supplier to our company. They apparently bought a batch of them as part of a prototype advertising booth display and have a couple extras used for spares. They said their lab tests indicated the Sharp LCD was superior to comparable displays by Phillips, Samsung, and KDS among others in several areas - brightness, clarity, response time, and color reproduction. Seems Sony knows how to pick a display.

Anyway, when I get it I'll attempt the transplant to my 9300. Couldn't find anyone with our parts supplier familiar enough with the Sharp LCD and Dell 9300 to venture an informed opinion regarding compatibility. Then again, no one knew of any reason it wouldn't work. We'll see....

That's great waynet! If you manage to get it to work.. perhaps you can see if the computer supplier or your company can order a batch at a low price and sell to those of us who needs it?

Damn I am not paying restocking 15%. Thats too much. Anyone know of a store that has no restocking. I think CUSA also has restocking for opened items. Lets see.

Thanks for the link. I looked at your sony link but unfortunately, when I go to service / repair all it shows is "place where you can get your sony repaired". BLAH!

Can someone take the initiative here and find me the SM.

You meant WUXGA screen right ?

Please post back some results..
- if possible just some pics of the Sharp PLUGS & WIRES (showing whether they are same or different)
- information (electrical & load specs...) of Sharp v/s Dell/LG or Samsung
- what else can you post?

Can you please post some links to your "research" ? Should be interesting to read.

Anyone make any progress with the Sony screens yet?

i'm calling BS on this, notebook companies just don't make modular screens, it is against their nature.
If I were running a notebook company, I'd sure want modular screens--lots and lots of other companies to drive down prices.

Hard drives are modular for much the same reason: personally making the stuff or ordering what amounts to custon drives in relatively small quanties would be extremely cost prohibitive.

Motherboards or any "board" designs are relatively cheap to spin. Silicon, hard drives, LCD panels have very large NRE (non-recurring engineering) costs and thus require huge production runs to justify the up-front costs.

Wxga

Ok i need help now!.... i bought an i9300 alright... i see the major light leakage on the bottom... the machine works so damn nice exept for the screen. .

I got the wxga+ screen not the wuxga.... i dont know if i got the LG or Samsung Screen, but from the pics i saw i think it is Samsung. I personaly dont like the WUXGA resolution so... i saw this dude transplanted a WXGA+ screen to his monster.

I got a couple of questions:
1. When you call dell for a screen replacement... does this cost money???? or they just send u a new one ??
2. About the Sharp WXGA+... where can i buy one at a cheap price?? links please?

1. They send you a new one. I've got the cheapest warranty available and I've had two screens swapped + one 6800 and Dell's paying the bill

Some light leakage is normal for any screen.

Mine leaks some, but I dont look at black screen saver in the dark on a regulary basis, so it does not bother me.

How about a Fujitsu LCD screen from a lifebook?

Okay guys, Am I to understand that this vasvas bought a SONY laptop and swapped out his dell screen for the sony one? Then returned it??? <giggling> what a great idea!!

CONSIDER THIS.......What about those wonderful Fujitsu laptop screens? Im sure Fujitsu doesnt make them, not sure who does, but I do know that NOTHING beats thier screens PERIOD.

I just bought a 9300 and havent even received it yet but already the wheels are turning, I didnt reallly care that much for the Sony screen but if I could get my hands on a beautiful fujitsu lifebook screen and put that in my 9300 it would be a match made in heaven. Those Fujitsu lifebooks screens have 400:1 contrast ratio and 300 nits of brightness, now thats what I call a good screen!!!

What do you guys think about this????
