Will the new ATI Catalyst 5.6 Drivers Work?

Thread Starter
on a newly delivered Gateway 680 model. I have it coming with the 2.13 processor, 1gb of DDR2 RAM, the 7200rpm hard drive and 12 cell battery. Just wanted to know if it's safe to load this new driver. It seems to offers some pretty kewl stuff as far as adjustments to the video card. If I'm not mistaken the Gateways are Arima built no? The Arima is one of the quoted acceptable laptops for use with this driver. If anyone could confirm this I'd appreciate it.

No. Primarily because the X700 notebook version is not supported by ATI. Not really Gateway's fault.

no the M680 is made by Quanta. Arima is listed on the supported notebooks for the new Mobility CATALYST, but not Quanta.

I'd try the new Mobility CATALYST anyway, see what happens. x700 is supported by it.

The new driver will not install on the M680 with the X700. The installer will tell you that the system is not compatible with the drivers.

This stinks.

What about the Omega drivers? will those work? Why aren't those cards supported by ATI if they are ATI chipsets? doesn't make a whole lotta fukin sense to me...wish I had known that before I bought my Gateway

I haven't tried the Omega drivers. I haven't played PC games in a couple of years. So I'm not in any hurry to get a few more fps in games by trying new drivers.

it's an ATI thing. up until recently (very recently, they only came out within the past couple of days), no notebook video cards were given driver support by ATI.

it's all supported in the normal CATALYST, it just won't install. Omega drivers are just modified CATALYST to let it install on them, and there's a couple other tweaks (softmods for desktop cards, etc).
