Newbie with an 8890 needs help please

Mine is on the mains all the time and I have left it on overnight with no trouble whatsoever. I too play games online with my 8890 for long periods and never had any trouble with it.

You dont really need any util to slow the system down.
The 8890 has more than enough cooling.

As you have probably noticed the kb can get a bit warm when the system is pumping. Closing the lid will turn off the LCD backlight (trust me on this - it is like the refridgerator light - no peeking though) but what concerns me about closing the lid with the machine running is that just below the kb is a metal heat spreader plate that radiates/conducts heat away from both the memory and graphics card. By closing the lid you may be stopping some of that extra heat from dissapating.

Granted the fans would come on more often, I don't know what kind of long term thermal effect it would have on the system.

As to running the battery, I leave my system on 24/7 with the battery in place. If you read the manual it suggests deep cycling the battery about once a month. Li-ion batts are usually pretty good at long term charging because of the smart IC chargers they require to meet their funny charge characteristics. You will find that any battery needs replacing after 1.5 - 2 yrs. Fact of life.

Why would you want to slow it down . They don't get that hot imho. Short of living in a tent in Iraq or the Simpson Desert here in Australia it shouldn't worry it. There was a thread about a laptop cooler using heat pipes - do a search.

The battery melting is normally caused when the IC that controls the charging goes wrong. Then its game over. I would suggest that it is very unusual and would have to be unlucky for it to happen to you.

A power supply on the outside? I don't understand.

That would be the power brick wouldn't it?

I am not sure if that is what tezz was referring to or some other magic or rumour I had not been up on.

It's half and Half, the Transformer is in the power brick and everything else is internal (it needs to be for when you are running off battery).

An entirely external Power supply would not be possible as it would always need to be plugged in for the Laptop to function (making it a bit less portable).
