Now, for the original poster...

If you need an ftp program, try Cyberduck.

If you code, try Smultron.

For IM with AOL, MSN, Yahoo, etc... try Adium.

A cool program for getting movie trailers, videos, and etc off of websites is iGetMovies.

All of these can be found at http://macupdate.com Another site with similar freeware is http://versiontracker.com

Go through those sites and you will find all kinds of neat, small apps that do things for you.

Why not use XCode, Frank?

Never tried it. I only do html and some cgi and javascript coding, though. I use to just use textedit, but smultron is nice since it keeps everything inside of one window.

Ah. For small stuff then it's probably great. You didn't specify, you just said "if you code".

Ah, my bad. Yeah, I'd follow your lead for more robust coding (software development, etc).
