Hey all - when i try to launch the BF2 demo, i get a black screen flicker, then it crashes back to the desktop. I've heard that it's the driver that's causing the issue - can anyone recommend an optimal driver for me?

Monkton,

I successfully ran Battlefield 2 on my 3790 last night and am loving it. I downloaded the drivers from www.omegadrivers.net. At first it wouldnt launch as well but after a few changes it worked fine I will post those changes later tonight. I cant now because I am at work, but I wanted fustrated 3790 users know it was possible.

if you previously played bf2 on your laptop using an external monitor and you set the resolution to a setting that is not supported by your laptop, you will not be able to launch the game. i found this out the hard way after numerous installation attempts because the "incompatible" resolution settings were still saved in the games settings, even after a re-install.

if you can hook up an external monitor to the laptop, and set that up as the only monitor active, then try loading BF2. if it loads, set the resolution to something compatible with your laptop.

this is a bug in the game and it drove me crazy, heh.

any other way to make it work?

only other way to correct it other than pluggin in an external monitor that supports a wider range of resolutions would be to completely un-instal the game including manually removing the game's registry files that it leaves behind because thats where the settings are stored in. i don't know how to do this.

but, if you are having this problem it would mean that you used an external monitor to play the game at one point. can't you simply re-use that same monitor to launch the game and change the resolution that way?

I know it has been awhile since you posted bf2 problems. Did you find out how to make bf2 run or bf 2142? I have the same issue just goes back to desktop on my 3790...

Thanks

Please explain EXACTLY what you did to get bf2 to run on your 3790. I changed the frame rate to 75 and got a little further. I have the original drivers.

thanx

Try editing the command line: Make the fullscreen value 0, and set a windowed resolution. Mine looks like this:

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +playNow 1 +menu 1 +fullscreen 0 +szx 1280 +szy 1024

It makes the game play as a window, instead of full screen. This solved the problem when I tried playing it on my 8790. Strangely, after playing it a couple times in a window, I was then able to switch it to fullscreen and play with no issues. Maybe it will work for you, too.

If you edit your profile under "My documents", it will fix the starting up problem.

Wow - this thread's old! I believe, and it's been awhile so I'm not 100% sure, that if you go to:
My documents->battlefield 2->profiles->default, then open "video" with notepad and change the "set resolution" line to 75hz (i think it defaults to 60) and save it. it's a refresh rate issue.
