Replacing a cracked LCD screen on HP zv5220us

Hi folks,

My Pavilion zv5220us took a tumble and ended up with a badly-cracked screen, as shown here:

I'm thinking of purchasing a replacement screen from eBay and installing it myself. Here's the one I'm looking at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

What I'm wondering is how to disassemble the screen. The four red circles on the picture are screws that I unscrewed. The two green circles are rubber bumpers that don't seem to have any screw behind them. After unscrewing the four screws, nothing really "gave" in terms of the front of the bezel or the lid, and I didn't want to try to pry anything off in fear of breaking it.

Does anyone know how to disassemble this? Are there only four screws? I think I'm on the right track; I'm just not exactly sure how to do this.

Thanks so much for any help anybody can provide! I look forward to fixing this... and doing a good job of protecting the computer next time around.

Luke

Here is a link to the service manual.

Thanks, Jericho. I actually have that manual printed up, but I can't find a section that explains how to remove and replace the LCD screen itself. The instructions in the manual (Section 5.14) seem to deal with removing and replacing the entire lid. So I guess I'm wondering if anybody has had experience with this (or a similar) repair.

Easy to change and let me know the price.. We may be able to beat the end auction cost..

wow... That's bad... Its cool the LCD still works... kind of...

Anyways i think there is only 4 screws... Plus there are plastic things that hold it in that you have to pop out, IIRC...

I don't know, but it may be easier to install the LCD if you pulled the lid/LCD off and did everything... Just remember to fallow the service manual... I think there is a part about taking the screen apart...

Also watch out for an antenna for the wireless... almost all the zv52xx have an antenna in the lid assembly...

You may consider having ikenfixit do it... I have never heard anything bad about them... But hey it may be something to consider...

Thats the correct place to start.. (Think I replied to the wrong post).. Sombody selling a laptop on ebay.. Get the 4 screws out and the bezels can be a pain also just wiggle while prying it off and you will be ok. (Make sure batterys out and powers off).. High voltage present on the output side of the inverter..

Thanks, Teckng and ikenfixit. I'm looking at something like this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1 Do you think you'd be able to beat something like that?

Also, once I have the four screws out, do I kind of try to separate (or "pop out") the inside part of the bezel from the screen using a flat-head screwdriver? Also, ikenfixit, do you think it's wise to first disconnect the entire lid from the rest of the laptop? Or is it fine to go ahead and simply remove the four screws while the screen is attached to the rest of the computer?

Well yes, use a flat-head screwdriver (a small one i feel is best)... On all LCD's I've done there were 2 ontop 2 on each side and the bottom had 2 small like pokers that went into holes...

But remember turn off all power... thats very important & were gloves for the install & use a can of air to blow out any dust...

It would be fine to do the install with the full LCD on the laptop but for me I always liked taking it off because i dont have to work with any angle... However in the end it takes longer and is more work...

WHOA! Almost $40 USD for shipping... Didnt know that it had 6 on these new ones... Good to know... I figured HP would have them like on the old pavilions & omnibooks...

Oh just so you know HP sells the LCD screen for your laptop for $811.00 ( http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=partlist&HP_model=PF143UAR&modname=HP+Pavilion+zv5220US+notebook+PC+( NA)&plist_styp=flag&plist_sval=ALL )

Thanks again for the help, guys. I think I'm going to try to buy one of those screens off of eBay.

I'm still having a bit of trouble getting the front bezel off. I don't know how much force I need to use. For anyone who may have experience with this model, would the best place to start be inserting a small flat-head screwdriver into the bottom of the front (kind of behind the "HP" logo under the screen) and then try to pry the front bezel off? I noticed I could partly separate the top part of the bezel from the lid. I just don't want to be missing something and accidentally break a piece in the process. Better safe than sorry, I figure.

I appreciate your assistance, everyone!

Just to update everyone... I managed to get the bezel off and the LCD screen removed. Turns out there was some sort of sticky substance (a tape or a glue) that was kind of holding the screen to the front bezel, and I need to use the screwdriver around the perimeted to gently separate the screen from the bezel. After that, everything was surprisingly simple! Now I just need to buy me a screen.

By the way, I see my screen model is a Samsung LTN154X1-L02. I've seen screens on eBay that are LTN154X1-L01 and LTN154X1-L03. Does anybody know exactly which one I need? Would any of the three work?

Thanks!

Well i would look for a screen that the seller says that it works with your laptop like the other did... Those other models may or may not work, but remember HP doesnt use the same model/brand for any laptop, I.E., you take 2 zx5000's and they may have 2 different brands of screens...

I was wondering if you could give me an update on your diy screen fix...i think i'm going to have to change mine out too...a local store quoted me 400...and i was considering it until i saw screens on ebay for 285...so i was wondering if the extra 115 was worth it or if it's a pretty easy project

I'm still waiting on the screen to arrive, but I think it will come tomorrow. Uninstalling the screen wasn't too bad, and I think re-installing the new one will be easier. I'll give an update once I receive the screen and attempt to install it.

What model number is your laptop, by the way?

Did you by any chance take pictures? you could write a DIY screen replacement guide... I see many people on other forums too that need to replace screens and dont have the money to pay to have it done...

I took a few pictures of the project. Maybe if I can find the time I'll throw something together. The whole repair really wasn't that difficult.

wldkatz03: If you're comfortable with "messing around" with your computer and are careful when you do it, I'd say go for it! Save yourself $200 or so by doing it yourself. The main problem I had was when removing the bezel from the broken screen. Evidently, there was some sort of glue or sticky tape holding the bezel to the screen, so I had to go around the perimeter with a screw driver to separate the two.

One more thing: If it helps you, I have zv5320us that originally had a Samsung LTN154X1-L02 screen, and the replacement is a LTN154X1-L01. Initially, I didn't know if the L01/L02 made a difference, but it didn't for me! I ended up paying $199.99 for the new screen, after shipping. :-)

Cool deal...

Heck i just found some of my tools for working on laptops yesterday... Amoung them: A tool/chemical we used to losen up the sticky strips... The bottle has no label because we would get it from or main 1/4 gallon bottle and put some into our little ones & mark it with a marker... So i dont remember/know what its called..
