Ferrari 3200's dying hard drive

I haven't been keeping up to date with the forum for several months now, and unfortunately I don't seem to be putting in the correct search terms or something since I can't find a similar recent thread.

My Ferrari's HD is showing signs of dying. In the middle of gaming (Warcraft 3) the whole laptop suddenly got very slow. Rebooting didn't work, so after several hours of troubleshooting I finally decided the problem lies in the hard drive. HD benchmarks hung several times, and when it managed to get through, the result was a speed about 1/10 of the expected. I turned off the laptop, and the next time I booted it up a week or two later, it was completely normal, benchmarks and all. Thus I suspect the hard drive is suffering from heat related issues.

I still have warranty on it, but I figure that since they would most likely simply replace the hard drive, and so I'm facing a complete backup procedure *anyway*, I might as well just buy a new, faster one myself (the laptop has the default drive it came with).

I want 80GB since I have a lot of data. I can't find a Hitachi HD that size and still 7200rpm, so I'm considering Hitachi Travelstar 5K100, 80GB 5400rpm 8Mt cache. Would that work with my laptop?

I am sure it will work for Ferrari 3200.But I think the problem of your orginal hardisk is due to the heat.As you feel, the left palm rest will become very hot after long hours used or during heavy loading. Hence, it is suggested that you buy a laptop cooler for it.

Yeah, I agree. However, I don't trust the old hard drive anymore: I feel it may have taken permanent damage by now.

The all-new Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 100GB 7200RPM hard drive should be available in stores worldwide soon enough.
