HELP!! One Fan is Making TONS of Noise!

Thread Starter
I just got my xps2 a month ago and my fan on the right side is making a grinding noise.
I did not abuse the laptop in any way....

But now I'm forced to ask for a replacement fan or send it in for dell to replace it.

If I have them send me the fan is it easy to replace?
I am so lost at the moment and any help would be appreciated, thanks a ton!

Take it apart and see if anything is stuck.

Aside from unscrewing the bottom screws and grounding myself... Is there anything else I need to know before taking it apart?

And is a fan replacement easy to do??

I would say make sure its not on. May be common sence, but not for everyone....

Download I8KFanGUI and turn the fans off one by one...

I haven't tried it but here's a link to the relevant Dell Document: http://support.dell.com/support/edoc....htm#wp1000550

It looks like its easy but it'll be a little bit of work as you've gotta remove the hinge cover, the keyboard, the display assembly and the palm rest to get to them. After that it's all about loosening a few screws and unplugging the fan.

Is there a way to find a similar walk-through for the XPS2?
Yeah right. I wouldn't even think of doing that without Tech support on the line. If it's doable then Tech support should walk you right through it.

I could do it in about 15 minutes but I've been inside mine a few times. Probably will take 45 minutes for a first timer.

The screen can stay attached to the palmrest.
Remove the hinge cover.
2 screws for the keyboard.
13 screws on the bottom.
Around 7 under the keyboard marked with a "P".
Unplug the 2 wireless antenna's and fish through to the top.
unplug the 2 monitor cables.
unplug the coincell battery.
separate the unit in half.

If you are not very mechanical, have dell do it. I never even looked at any diagrams the first time I opened mine up.

Hold on Man. - "Separate the unit in half"

Jeez, ..... I can see myself taking 45 mins to dismantle; and then 45 hours to put it back.

Too funny Man. - That reminds me of your "Set of camshafts" post. Way back.

It's normal for the left fan to be noticably louder than the right side fan....it's a bigger fan.
