Did I make a big mistake?

Hi all.

Recently I bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 off ebay. It had a cracked LCD so I got it for cheap. I bought a replacement LCD for it and will install it when it arrives.

Before I bought the laptop, I read quite a few negative reviews about the 6100. Now, I am -very- suspicious of many negative reviews because I've found that 1 negative customer tends to write up about 100 negative reviews under all kinds of aliases just to damage a products reputation. However this laptop appears to have 2 main problems- it eats hard drives, and there's a problem with the graphics card, which Tosh. will fix even if it's out of warranty.

I recently sold my desktop PC and I bought the 6100 because of its beefy processor as well as gaming and media capabilities. I'm moving to Japan in about 6 months and need some kind of notebook powerful enough to take on some serious computing needs while at the same time not costing me fortunes to ship, move around and maintain.

I'm really concerned that if I keep it I'm going to wind up with a dead computer that I invested nearly 900$ CDN into, and I'll only be able to get 500$ back off of ebay because of a dead, critical component.

On the other hand, it seems like the only laptop out there with all the things that I was looking for in my price range. I'm a student on a budget so this was a bit of an investment. I'll be breaking out the can opener to afford this

I have a dell ultraportable notebook, 700mhz, but it's not powerful enough for things like sound and video editing. It's also a potential unneeded expense. If the 6100 was reliable, I'd sell the dell in a heartbeat and make some serious money back. But if I'm without a computer, I'm in a world of hurt.

Have I made a mistake buying this Tosh 6100? Should I resell it on ebay and get something else?

It kinda' sounds like you're simultaneously talking yourself into and out of the 6100 ;-)

You can read my posts here and elsewhere about the 6100. I agree that it's more likely that someone will post with a negative rather than a positive experience, but note on my post that I don't have one bad 6100; I support 107 and most all have had catastrophic problems.

If you need reliability get rid of the 6100. If you feel like you've invested too much already then invest a little more in one of those cooling pads with built-in fans. Some of my users have purchased them to extend the time between HD crashes. And, of course, back-up, back-up, back-up... maybe to the Dell or at least an external HD.

And so you know when you see it later, yes hard drive, yes the VGA bracket, but also keyboards, powerboards, cooling modules, AC adapters, inverters... you know, I bet I know how that LCD got cracked, was there a fist print?

Thanks for your input. I made my decision last night. I am putting the Toshiba up for sale on ebay with the new screen, hopefully I'll break even on the investment I put into it.

I ordered myself a Dell XPS Generation 2 laptop instead, using a special financing discount I got through my university. Price is still pretty steep but I won't have to upgrade this thing for 3 years at least. And the warranty is good for 3 years too.

Guess I can sell my other, more portable dell too.

I'm still looking for what type of laptop I want to take to college, and for a while I was sure that the XPS is what I wanted. However, What cinched the deal for you?
