Hi all.
Recently I bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 off ebay. It had a cracked LCD so I got it for cheap. I bought a replacement LCD for it and will install it when it arrives.
Before I bought the laptop, I read quite a few negative reviews about the 6100. Now, I am -very- suspicious of many negative reviews because I've found that 1 negative customer tends to write up about 100 negative reviews under all kinds of aliases just to damage a products reputation. However this laptop appears to have 2 main problems- it eats hard drives, and there's a problem with the graphics card, which Tosh. will fix even if it's out of warranty.
I recently sold my desktop PC and I bought the 6100 because of its beefy processor as well as gaming and media capabilities. I'm moving to Japan in about 6 months and need some kind of notebook powerful enough to take on some serious computing needs while at the same time not costing me fortunes to ship, move around and maintain.
I'm really concerned that if I keep it I'm going to wind up with a dead computer that I invested nearly 900$ CDN into, and I'll only be able to get 500$ back off of ebay because of a dead, critical component.
On the other hand, it seems like the only laptop out there with all the things that I was looking for in my price range. I'm a student on a budget so this was a bit of an investment. I'll be breaking out the can opener to afford this
I have a dell ultraportable notebook, 700mhz, but it's not powerful enough for things like sound and video editing. It's also a potential unneeded expense. If the 6100 was reliable, I'd sell the dell in a heartbeat and make some serious money back. But if I'm without a computer, I'm in a world of hurt.
Have I made a mistake buying this Tosh 6100? Should I resell it on ebay and get something else?
