I assume it is DDR2.

If this is correct, what form factor of DDR2 is it?

Don't tell me its the same form factor of DDR2 used in desktops....lol
post #2 of 20
of course it is not. There a big different between desktop ram and laptop ram. t43 is using ddr2 4200 which is 533mhz

where can I buy one 512mb stick of that for my T43?
I suggest direct from IBM since if you use ram from other places, it'd void the warranty.
Are you sure it'll void the warranty? I doubt it would... typically, simply changing the RAM would void the warranty, and that's not common nowadays. If IBM did that, I would be incredibly surprised...

Thats what ibm reps told me. I was quite surprised too. They said the reason for that is to ensure 100% compability. But i couldn't find anything like it in the documentations on warranty.

Lenovo will not warranty "failure caused by a product for which Lenovo is not responsible", which I think is pretty standard. They're not going to turn back a repair on your hard drive just because you installed somebody else's memory in the ThinkPad. There's no warranty seal over the memory door on the bottom of the case, so as long as it's good quality industry standard memory, and you know what you're doing and take the standard precautions, you're pretty safe. Just be certain to remove the non-Lenovo parts before sending in your laptop.

^^^ WHAT HE SAID! Just make sure that you take the non-lenovo or non-IBM RAM or parts that you have put in the laptop back out!

besides IBM please

Well, Crucial has this Memory Advisor tool that guarantees compatibility with your computer model. But I don't know if it will affect IBM's warranty...maybe I'll wait until my warranty's over (in a year or so) before upgrading memory.

does anybody know what brand memory IBM uses in the t43?

Basically I want to buy the same exact ram, but NOT FROM IBM.

Any of you guys with a T43 want to take a peak at your memory for me

Buying extra ram and putting it into your laptop DOES NOT void warranty as long as the upgraded part itself did not cause the problem!! My R32 came with 256MB and I put another 256MB into it. I've also upgraded the 30Gb 4,200rpm to a 60Gb 7,200rpm. Since then I've taken it for repairs due to numerous reasons, ie fan failure and they have never rejected me. They do record the spec of my computer every time I take it in for service and they never ever fuss about it. Upgrading parts through any large computer company like IBM/Dell/Compaq is always a rip-off.

Also, buying the exact same RAM, but not from IBM will not prevent them from knowing that it is a user-upgraded part since all IBM parts have a barcode on them and from the model number (For example 1836Q4H), they know exactly what came with the computer and wouldn't take them long to find any non-IBM part.

I hope this helps a bit.

Exactly what he said. Don't waste your time worrying about whether to upgrade or not. Every part of ibm has a fru number or whatever they call it and for the most part hard drives and memory could be upgraded to your hearts content without affecting the warranty. Anyway i have never had problems with Ibm whenever i had a service call. Just send it in the way it is and at the very worst they will tell you that they wont cover the extra memory. IBM techs are pretty cool that way.
