17" wuxga?

are there any notebooks out there with a 17" wuxga (1920x1200) screen or similar? 15.4" strikes me as small (inspiron 8600) for a resolution this large.

So far there is no sign of 17" notebook screens any higher than 1440x990 WXGA. The question is; why arent the manufacturers trying to get better res screens on those theatrebooks!!! Sure movies look great, but we want our games to look great too.

Im glad they realised consumers wanted 128meg gpu's in them instead of the 64meg ones they were nickel n' diming us with.
(voodoo and hypersonic better listen up)

agreed, seems backwards to me. reading lots of complaints about wuxga being too high on 15.4", so why won't they put them on 17"? battery issues aside (my laptop is always plugged in), i don't see what the problem is.

Alot of times the hardware needs of the gaming community get ignored because in the companies eyes we make up a very small demographic. Its possible their right, but its not smart to exclude our wants. Were the ones who are most likely to blow major bucks on a widescreen laptop.

personally, i haven't touched a computer game in about 4-5 years. nor do i watch dvd's. i do development and want something portable yet with a lot of real estate, but something that's not going to kill my eyes (ie 1920x1200 on a 15.4"?) when i have to do 12 hour stretches. so i probably represent an even smaller demographic. or perhaps larger since i'll be using it for work? regardless, we needs the precious..

I want a 1920x1080 resolution laptop! (widescreen, HDTV res).

Yes, I definately see where your coming from Captain. Apparently then, there are many groups of people who would benefit from such a notebook. 1920x1080 would be so divine.

I've had no problems at all on my 15.4 WUXGA (Dell M60). If the fonts are too small, bump em up with the control panel and/or preferences, it's that simple. And, with the Dell screen, the text is still crisp and good for reading.

What is one of the primary reasons that new hardware comes out? GAMES! It's nonsense to say that the needs of the gaming community are being ignored. We do not make up a small demographic; the gaming industry is a multi- billion dollar industry and games are a major reason that new home pcs are sold each year (I absolutely must play Half-Life 2 with ALL the features on insane levels).

Personally, I see widescreen laptops becoming the norm within the next year. Apple's been selling them for years now, and PCs are introducing new WS lappies almost..every month? Each major company's brand spankin new laptop is a widescreen! As far as high resolutions, it's the same as the flat-screen/crt monitor market -- who the heck sets their crt to UXGA? hardly anybody. Who needs insane res. on their laptop? hardly anybody.

I bet you money that high res 17" lappies will be out by January. Double bet you even: Dell is making the M70 which is widescreen and will be insane res just like the current M60. Apple will be introducing G5 powerbooks by Q2-Q3 next year probably, and the 17" will most definitely be a higher res.

i'm sure they are, have read a news source saying they've been timid but surely they are entering this market. that's the question, the question is whether they'll do something new (wuxga) or keep it boring (1400x900). my guess is the latter, hope is the former.

The M70 will be out by early next year if not later this year; notice the M60 is steadily dropping in price. The M70 is rumored to be 17" and hold better specs than the M60, and will be a workstation notebook, which equals $$ and buying as a small business.

No professional would put up with the pathetic resolutions of the current 17" notebook -- hence the standard high res of the current M60. Dell knows this, and the res will be high, I promise.

you seem quite certain? would the M70 also carry the upcoming Dothan Centrino 2 chip? those're apparently scheduled to come out end of this year / beginning of next, would be nice to see both features rolled into one -- 17" wuxga centrino 2 @ 2.0ghz

Well, I did say rumor; it's safe to say that I'm simply spreading that rumor, but it comes from reliable sources

I have no clue about the potential chip, but if Dell continues to push the envelope like they have with the M40, M50, and M60, it'll be top-of-the-line in every way.

i'll toss my pennies into that wishing well. do these reliable sources have a projected release date?
Originally it was thought to be released at the beginning of next year (if not late this year), but if it goes like the M60 did, it may not be until Q2 next year.

Only toss your pennies into the well if you can wait Hopefully it doesn't go like the Sager 8890/5680 release

yeah, i read that Dothan keeps getting delayed, but some sources state that Dell will be an ODM to carry the new chip in their new line. the question of course is when.

i can wait
