How many have reformatted?

Hello everyone,

My new I6000 arrived a few days ago and i was rather dissapointed with the ammout of useless software that came one it. I odreded it with the 80 gig hard drive only to have 63.2 gig's availiable after dell partitions, software ect...

so i called dell up and ordered the os recovery disk, which should arrive soon (was i supposed to ask for a driver disk too if i plan to reformat?)

So before i reformat my brand new computer, i was wondering how many of you have reformatted your dells, and if so, are you happy with the results? Or does this OS disk end up loading all of that software back on in addition, which puts me where i started?

thanks

Here's a poll in the 9300/XPS2 section about reformatting. Many people do reformat their Dells after receiving them. I did, and mine performs much better than it did with Dell's factory install.

The OS recovery disk does not load the bloatware back on. You can download the drivers from Dell's website, so you don't need the driver disk.

I format all the time. Reason: Its cheaper since I already have a XP Pro disk with a valid serial number (So i don;t have to order the xp pro from dell thats gonna cost me another 79 bucks) and its cleaner (no viruses, corrupted files, spyware, etc)

Hmm, When i ordered my XP Pro disc from dell, i diddnt have to pay anything, not even shipping

I formatted. Does the 6000 come with the XP CD Creation software? I thought they were doing that for ALL Dell's now, and purposely not sending people OS media?

Either way, formatting is pretty much a must-do task for everyone. Bloatware + sometimes shitty FAT32 Partitions = bad.

I reformatted my 9300. It had a XP CD creation tool and it burned the OS and all the drivers to a CDR and installed fine. All drivers in place.

can i just use the add/remove programs to remove some of the files? will that help boost the performance because i don't want to go through the process of reformatting...

jordan1, my dell also has that tool to create the xp cd, which i did. from what you are saying, this cd has the OS, all neccicary drivers, and leaves out all the dell software junk, where the disk i just ordered contains only the OS?

thanks again

For those of you who have used the dell os disc, do you know if it puts the hidden dell partition back on there also? It is a large partition, and one of my main reasons for reformatting will be to save space.

again, thanks for all of your help, its much appreciated

i formatted, but i also installed a new HD .. so i kinda had no choice, other than ghosting, but i installed xp pro with sp2 slipstreamed

How would I order the Dell OS Recovery Disc? I'm getting my 6000 in a week and the bloatware they've listed really isn't appealing to me.

The Dell OS CD is just a Windows XP CD. You can delete the Dell partitions and create your own just as you would with any other Windows XP CD.

You don't need to order one - when you receive your laptop, there should be an option to burn an OS CD in your Start menu under Dell Accessories.

everyone, thanks for your replies, as they have made me feel much better about reformating. I do have 1 last question before i do it. From replies, i gather that using the os cd that i created with the utiity on the dell is my best bet as it has all the driers. My quesion is do the drivers from that disc install when i install xp, or will i have to install them myself.

again, thanks for all the help

I would still recommend downloading and installing the drivers from Dell's website. After you reinstall using the Dell OS recovery CD, you won't have any question marks in device manager, but you also won't have any of the extra utilities that are installed with the drivers (such as the system tray utilities for wireless and bluetooth).

New 6000D arrived today, installed 2GB of RAM and XP Pro. Never even booted the XP Home that was pre-installed. I like things my way.

What do you mean? The wireless utilities won't be availible?
