51M-7700 sent to depot...

Well, i had my first problem with my laptop and it was BAD. The laptop ran like a dream for a few months up until last week.

The first sign of a problem was that it would suddenly restart on me while playing games. I didnt think too much of it until after the first day. Randomly throughout the day it would restart. I would play for a few hours, restart. I would play for a few minutes, restart. Well finally i decided to call technical support on the matter. He had me disable all applications with the exception of windows and norton programs. He proceeded to instruct me to play the game that i had the most problems with (America's Army). Well after about 5 minutes of play it restarted on me. I was shocked actually because its usually my luck that when i would report a problem and someone was there to witness it, it wouldnt happen.

Well this time it was worse that the norm. After the laptop restarted on me, it did it again right away. Only this time I started to get this high pitched whining noise and my laptop wouldnt load up, no hard drive activity, nothing, with the exception of the display lights indicating that its powered up. When i would leave it on for a minute, the fans would kick on as it should when the laptop starts to give off heat. This was no high pitched whine that a fan would make either, well, at least not fans below the laptop. And each and every time i started the laptop up, i would get the same noise.

Anyway, Im still on the phone with technical support in which he directs me to perform a series of steps to isolate the problem. First thing was to reseat the video card. Then remove the hard drives, which was the most difficult task to perform considering the tight space between the hard drives itself and the connector to remove them. I also had to remove the DVD drive, clear the CMOS, and last but not least, remove and insert the mem cards one by one to isolate each individual card. None of this made it work.

At this point I have learned to pretty much rape my laptop apart and put it together. I can only imagine the fear in the eyes of those who arent electronically inclined to perform these tasks.

In conclusion it came down to me having to send in the laptop into depot for repair, which has a mandatory turnaround of 15 days from the time it is received. During this process i kept my cool. The support representative was very kind and patient. I believe I had spoken with the two reps between 2 and 3 hours during this process. I switched reps when he directed me to remove the CMOS battery which involved removing the keyboard. I guess he had some other matters to tend to in which he was busy the 2nd time i called up. But either way they were both very kind and patient.

So here I am back to my old laptop anxiously awaiting the results of what the problem ended up being. I have looked on the forums and noticed that quite a few people are also experiencing the same preliminary issue before it crapped out on me as far as the computer randomly restarting, but none who had the end result with a high pitch whine as soon as i started my laptop and no activity. Hopefully you wont end up with the problem i have. At this point AW still has my full support of a great machine that happened to develop a unique problem(supposedly). And i trust that they will fix the problem and I can move on knowing that i didnt burn up 4200 bucks.

Nothing worse then a PC problem that you can't diagnose and fix yourself. Man that sucks. My video card died on me a few weeks ago. The process was actually very painless for me, but then again I didn't have to send my PC back to the mothership for repairs. They made me take the card out, and clear the CMOS (which I had already done) before they beleived me when I said it was video card.

They sent me a new one, I replaced it and sent the old one back to them. Simple. I was very pleased I must say.

But never the less that sucks you had to send yours in.

sorry to hear about the problems you are having w/ your 7700. Hope you get everything resolved and get your lappy back to you asap. I'm sure the AW reps will take care of the situation for you. If you have any further issues, our local AW reps here are very helpful.

Hardware failure does suck, but all they can do is go over the machine for you and replace anything that's not working right.

The wait is always painful, but AW will get you squared away...

I have the older revision of the motherboard. But either way, i was told to give them a call on thursday and they should have some sort of an update on the problem. They should receive the laptop today through fedex. The good thing is that there is a 15 day turnaround for the return. I just hope they dont rush into things and forget something or fail to repair the problem. I also have ZERO dead pixels and I hope that it returns to me that way. As I said, I have full confidence in AW that they will fix the problem as I dont particularly have any reason not to trust them yet. We will see.

An update on the situation....

It looks as though something happened to my motherboard. They didnt have any details other than that they replaced it. The best part is that i had an old revision motherboard, and when i asked them if they installed the latest one that supports the 6800 Ultra, they said YES! So not only did they fix my lappy, I got the latest version MOBO! Thank You AW! You guys are awesome!

On the side note, all im doing now is awaiting fedex to return the laptop to its rightful owner.

Well i hope everything is well and glad that so far you have had a positive experience with the Depot.

Same boat here. Mobo died two weeks into ownership, due from FedEx TODAY.

Jeez, something else to worry about now, I hadn't stopped to think that I too had (have?) ZERO dead pixels and I too am praying it comes back that way.

You should be alright. keep a positive hope, hehe. I hope I don't have a mobo problem in the future. Anyway of finding out exactly what happened to those things?

That's what I was talking about, hehe. hey, you should have asked them if they could do a trade-in on your go6800 for the Ultra since they have it in-shop.

I'll just paste in my reply from the other thread here:

Lappy's back from her two weeks in the Depot, and all seems to be ok now.

It will, however, be a long time before I will be comfortable in trusting the hardware will not fail again. Of this only time will tell.

BTW, for those not lucky enough to have had the pleasure of the Depot Experience, be warned when your box comes back, there will be a bill in it, with a paragraph at the bottom that reads:

"In accepting this form, I authorize the charges for the corresponding transactions." ... Nowhere on the invoice does it indicate that this is informational only, rather it very convincingly suggests you will be billed the repair amount, in my case, over $300 for a replaced motherboard.

This is NOT helping my opinion of AW at the moment. I had to yet effing again, call customer service and deal with someone who's not got a very good grasp of the English language. Further, each and every time you call, you are nagged to provide account number, address, phone number and email address. FOUR pieces of identification. I can cross international borders with less hassle. The call itself would not have been necessary if the damned "invoice" was clear that you would not be charged for the repair.

Overall, this has been an exceedingly inconvenient and annoying experience.

it could have been worse, they could have asked you to submit a picture identifying any incriminating marks on your penis.
