Hi, I've got a T42 here at work. Do I need to shut it down before docking or undocking? I've gotten the blue screen of death a couple of times when I hot swapped it.

ok....here is what I have learned about docking and undocking my R50 which uses the same docking station as the T40 series....

1- In the best case scenario, you dock it while its in standby and undock it while its on

2- If you dock it while its on, if its not successful you will have the screen come up and say "Hardware Failure Dumping Physical Memory" ....that comes up when the dock doesnt go in perfect the first time, so I always press down firmly and make sure everything is ready and nothing is stuck so when you put it in it wont jam or anything...

If you undock it while its on, all you have to do is go to start >>> undock its pretty easy!

Hopefully that answers your question!

I've been using a docking station with my Thinkpad for the better part of the last 5 years and here is what I suggest.

Dock it before you turn it on and leave the lid closed. When you power up, your Thinkpad will automatically recognize the resolution of your external LCD and configure accordingly. My Thinkpad is 1400 X 1050 and I use a 20 Dell LCD with a native resolution of 1600 X 1200. My Thinkpad will auto set the LCD resolution and retain my icon settings from the last docked bootup.

When I'm finished for the day, I ALWAYS shutdown before I undock my laptop. Never had a problem using this approach.

Where do you see "start >>> undock"? Apparently, I don't have that.

I have it right beside the "Log off" and "Shut Down Computer" buttons....there is an undock button right beside that....make sure that all your IBM software is up to date, unless you did a fresh boot of XP, and then you might not have the same buttons...

To undock just click on the icon on the system tray that says Safely Remove Hardware and select the docking station to undock.

I havent ever bothered with "proper" undocking, i just eject and redock powered on or powered off, usually on. I havent ever had an issues whatsoever.

I don't see the undock button besides the shutdown button and I can't dock-undock powered up. I put system on standby before I do it.

I feel, if you do not have USB devices active on the DOCK and/or active serial/parallel connection alive, then undocking and docking powered on results in problems. If you don;t then it may not be an issue.

Also the type of DOCK you have may make a difference. I have a port replicator and its not friendly with hot undock/dock.
