I'm confused between the Sony DSC-V1 and the Canon Powershot G5. Which is better? Are there any 5.0 Megapixel ones better? Thanks!

LOL! Yup, buying lots of new things. I want the best to go with my 8890. I think I like the sony one, has unlimited video capability as well, also has excellent night shots. The cannon can only get 3-4 mins of video regardless of memory size. I think the sony it is....What do you think???

The Canon Gx series is great. Had a G2 for a long time and loved it . I'll have a new one soon. Images are incredible.

Looking for a Camera

I'm still looking at Digital Cameras and thought you guys might like to help.

I'm looking for at least 3.2 megapixel with flash. I don't want to use Smart media, any other media type is fine.

Here's one camera I've been looking at.

My girlfriend feels thats not the "Right Camera" for me. Whatever the hell that means.

Any ideas, or anyone have experience with a camera in the $200-$400 range let me know so I have some ideas on what to get.

Simple: CANON.

Check out their PowerShot offerings (Axx and Sxx) - best you can afford (whichever model).

Next would be Minolta Dimage series.

PS: I used to highly recommend OLYMPUS cameras, as they have the best pictures for the sub $500 range, but they went to that xD card, and like Sony and their memory stick: Olympus can STICK it!

Thanks for the tip. I like the looks of that G5. But I think I'm going to go with this one:

The G5 is a most excellent camera - nice and compact, too - chicks love that (oddly enough, but only in a camera! ).

If you have $500 (about what this'll run ya), check out Olympus' C-5050Z - I know I spoke ill of their xD, but I have the C5050 and it uses CF, SM and xD, so it's nice and versatile. But it's complex and large compared to the G5.

I'd stick with the G5 for you.

I'm looking at the Canon Powershot S50. The G5 is nice but a little outside my price range.

You sure change your mind fast!

Yeah, stick with the best S-series you can get, or the equiv. A-series. Depends how much photography you want to be into (as opposed to just pointing and shooting).

Either way, I think the Canons will fit you, but check with your ball-n-chain, just in case.

If you check the link in my original message, I said "but I think I'll go with this one instead" and linked to a review of the S-series one...

Yeah really, she seems to know more then I could ever hope to know about digital cameras and photography.

Kinda creepy when she stopped the picture guy at Halloween Horror Nights trying to determine if he was using a G2 or a G3...

I'm seriously considering a DSC-V1 too. They all have pros and cons, but the Sony is supposed to have a better DIGITAL zoom, whereas I hear most other digital zooms are not good at all. Admittedly, the Sony D-zoom is stepped down in that the "more" you zoom the lower your resolution has to be. I think I could live with that. Opinions anyone? (I know you have few if any. )

The Pentax Optio 555 looks pretty nice too. A little more compact than the Sony, with a 5X Optical zoom I believe.

Check out these links for some reallllly detailed reviews.

It's a jungle out there and really tough to decide. I want 5MP or more for good resolution, and I'd like a bit of portablity. On the other hand it's hard not to drool over the new Canon Rebel EOS and other "prosumer" models. Considering that I'm upgrading from a monster Sony Mavica FD-91 (.8MP (yes, point-8) with a 14X OPTICAL zoom that records on floppy disks) I guess anything will be an improvement.

Two things: 1) NEVER rely on Digital ZOOM, you'll be unsatisfied. ALWAYS go by OPTICAL zoom.
2) Sony has proprietary Memory Sticks which are expensive and limiting

If neither of those bother you, then go for a Sony. I personally think they have horrible image rendering/capture, but I've only used the DSC-F5 (or something like that, it has the 10x optical Carl Zeiss lense - which is nice). Also, their battery life BITES in a BIG way.

Perhaps Sony has changed, but I doubt it. They are shoddy and unreliable in my experience with them. I'd even rather have a NIKON coolpix than a Sony but I'm just an instigator, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

My uncle has one of those Sony Digital Videocameras. That thing is pretty darn nice. Though it does use the Sony proprietary memory stick...

Not only am I spoiled by the 14X Optical zoom of my antique Mavica, but I like to "frame" a shot when I'm taking it. I believe I'm correct in that when you look at a scene, and then look at it through your camera in un-zoomed mode, it's going to take a shot that looks more distant than it actually is because your sort of in wide-angle lens mode, so you already have to zoom a little to get it into "actual view" mode, then if you want to "crop" it before the shot you have to zoom a little more.
I am concerned about a "little red flag" in the DSC-V1 reviews pertaining to "outdoor shots with indirect sun" (whatever that is) always having a blue tinge when in Auto White Balance mode (the default I believe).
Thanks for the comments. I'm in no rush so I'll keep researching. It's nice to be able to get thorough reviews on the 'Net, but they're mind boggling also.

Canon Digital Rebel

http://store.yahoo.com/citywidedigit...osdirewi1.html

Don't even bother with the G5, this is an excellent price on an excellent digital SLR camera. This has the same chip as the Canon EOS 10D, but it costs about have as much and comes with a lens. This is a 6.3 MP camera that has received rave reviews everywhere. For just a little bit more that the G5, you will be much happier with this.

I've been drooling over that one. Not quite the portability I'd prefer, but quality to die for, fer sure. The price at that link is awesome too. Looks like it has the "preferred" starter lens, 18-55mm, I've seen recommended. I've been lugging my "five pound" Mavica around, so anything is more portable. However I do a bit of hiking and skiing and wouldn't mind something that fits in a coat pocket. I can't find that the Rebel EOS has a video mode either. Not the end of the world, but handy for those few occasions when you want to capture some special movement. (Changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown, burro races in Fairplay, the Royal Guards practice at Buckingham, you know the usual.) Still .......
