argh! Daemon Tools will not install without error!!!!!!!blah!!!

everytime i attempt to install Daemon Tools in XP(1.7ghz/1gb) I am able to get to the first install screen with the eula, but then it gives me to following error after initiating the install:

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode[...which i am not...], or if the Windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
I created a test user and tried to install in an unspoiled user environment but to no avail.

I smell spyware or virus.

the only spyware i have is bearshare related, which i allow to reside on the system. everything else has been eliminated via: spyware doctor, ad aware, ms antispyware, registry mechanic, and system mechanic. this sux0r

A recent Windows Update was to the Windows Installer. See if you can remove it via Add/Remove programs. It should show up as Windows Installer 3.1.
