That would be a hell of an April fool's joke wouldn't it? I am getting a laugh out of your mispelling my screen name though

I think I have proven that there is a performance increase after I did the hardmod. I can't say for certain that it is due to extra pipelines though I cannot think of any other reason for the jump in performance. If anyone else has some suggestions as to why I am seeing a performance increase I am listening...

In reading other threads about people enabling more pipelines on desktop cards it seems that sometimes there is a correlation between the number stamped on the card and the ability to enable anymore pipelines.

I just ran the 3DMark05 benchark again with no overclocking using the latest Dell drivers:

Optimal Performance: 3354
Optimal Quality: 2563

No offence, just numbers

to add more numbers to your mix, i just d-load 3dmark05 and ran it, (the unregistered version if that makes any difference) i ran the test will all the crap i usually have running in the background and w/ 0 overclock. i got a score of 2652... i think thats damn good for getting FPS of no higher than 3 on that one test. that one made me laugh, ... then cry.

Did you run it in performance mode or quality. If you ran it in quality mode I don't think the mod worked, if you ran it in performance mode and got 2600 and raelcun is getting 3300, both with no O/C then maybe it did work.

2652 is normal (for Dell drivers you are using now), no o/c and "Balance" quality settings (default one). I suppose you didn't do the mod, right?

yes, i didn't do the mod yet, i want to know it works first, i just posted to give people more data for a normal mr9800 3dmark05 score. sorry for the confusion.

i got this mod to work. i have been following this project for a long time, since i got my Inspiron 9100 with 3.2ghz P4, 1gb of ram, and mr9800 in august 2004. last thursday i opened up my laptop and used a conductive pen i got from radioshack and connected the pipelines on the core. i used a relatively large blob of ink that completely covered the two dots on the right with the cut but connected no other dots. i then closed it back up and let it sit until friday afternoon...

friday afternoon i booted up and ran the CS:S stress test. normally with the graphics settings i use i get around 85.54 fps. that day i got 102.3 fps, a substancial jump. excited, i then ran 3dmark03. in the control panel i have all setting set to "application preference." at stock speeds, modded 5.6 cats, and normal background crap and dell bloatware, i can get 6448 3dmarks. at 445mhz core and 422mhz mem i can get around 8120. after the mod i get 7925 with all of the above video settings and stock speeds. in the battlefield 2 demo on the singleplayer map, before the mod i got fps's in the 40's while walking through the village and after the mod i get in the 60's with the same video settings...so appearently the mod caused a performance increase...

using i8kfangui i have noticed a slight increase in idle video temps from 45c to 47c with a similar 2 degree change under load.

i strongly believe that success in this mod depends on when your core was made...the numbers printed on my core are as follows:
216PECGA12F
GC3148.1
0427AA
i am no expert, but i know that these numbers are similar to raelcun's and they might indicate that our core's were part of the same "batch" and therefore have the disabled pipes. later revisions of the card probably have permanently disabled pipes, which may account for the lack of successful reactivation of pipes for some people.

i have stock dell bios for my mr9800 and i did not participate in the suicide flashing experiments. i am running 3dmark03 at the default trail version settings. i did not overclock to get my performance increase. the only thing i can think of was the mod i did last thursday. in the off chance that my success gives you the courage to try this mod and you kill your card, i am not at fault.

p.s. the only reason i got a membership on this forum was to post the results of my pipe mod. if you mods wish to delete my account, go ahead, but for the love of God dont delete this post!!!

Out of curiosity, has anyone yet hurt their card in any way doing THIS mod? I'm getting enticed...don't do that to me...

Yup, all of them voided the warranty on their computers. But, this was expected. (HAHA I love being a downer.)

just finished the mod:

before - stock with cat 5.6 (performance): 2562
after - stock with cat 5.6 (performance): 3381

nothing else changed, I ran 3dmark05, disassembled and reassembled then booted up and ran it again.

Welcome Anticitizen 2,
I hope you're a real person but not an evil second identity of one of active members of the forum . Please don't disapear. Everyone would be interested to see pictures of your mod, could you post it here? What is your 3DMark05 score?

It seems you have achieved success! Congrats! You could probably even beat my top score if your card can still overclock to 440/440.

More pipes + higher clock than stock = toasty toasty.

Got a nice pic for me to have a look at, of the gpu and the mod before/after ?
I will attempt it, maybe
VRT, still a non believer???? everyone seems to be getting the same results...

A million processes running, P4 3.0 @ 3.2, 9800 @ 420 / 440 and hopefully 12p:

3dmark2005: 4013

I have instructions and tons of high resolution images on my site:

Bdork - nice writeup! can you elaborate on what you need to take off the 4 "weird star shaped" screws to remove the heatsink off the videocard?
They've got 5 points I think, so it looks like a star... There is a name for them, but I don't know it. It's just that your regular set with philips etc. won't do it. I had a cheap PC repair kit and it had about 4 sizes of them.
