12 pipe mobility 9800 - Page 11

Not sure about using the AS5 that way. Normally you would have to fill the gap with a piece of copper and AS5. But, my GPU is also at about 57C right now. That is with my fans barely running though.
Well the only reason I used it was because there was a guide for using it on the Geforce 6800Go in the 9300 forums I performed that mod on my 9300 and it made the temps about 4degrees lower so I figured it would do the same on my 9800 it takes about 3-4 days to get max performance out of the AS5 though so I may wait a few days and see how the temps get.

Maybe we can talk to the guys in the XPS2/9300 forum. They seem to be having luck unlocking the bios so they can OC. I know it's different but they seem to know what they're doing when it comes to messing with video Bios. Don't get me wrong, I'd be more than happy with 12 pipes, but if 16 is possible then...

Oh and how much is the conductive pen? There's a Radioshack across from the office I'm working at and I can go down there in about an hour, but I don't want to get it now if it's expensive (I don't know when my chip was made, checking when I get home). I'm thinking mine should be okay since I got it the last week of August, and the chip had to be made by or before then.

I bought the pen at Radioshack for $12.99 yesterday.

I've lernt last night that my chip is the youngest so far - 3rd week of 2005. I've bought it about 3 months ago. So, I decided not to mess with it for now. Does anybody else have a chip made in 2005? Did you tryed the mod?

Wow that IS young.
Ya mine isn't working. I think my small bump was from the drivers and the reboot. VRT mine is young 0451AA . Wonder what they changed in the newer ones.

Well I got the conductive pen from Radioshack. It's produced by Caig and is blue. It's called the CircuitWriter (I just wanna make sure I have the right one). When I get home I'll try applying it. I'm pretty sure my card was made somewhere around the 34th week, so it should work. But let's say I put on too much (or it doesn't work and I want it off), what should I use to get rid of the paste?

Yeah 1/2 bent, yours is young. I'm guessing you got yours in December? The 51st week would be the 2nd to last week of December'04. So far we haven't found a way to get anyone with a card older than 35 weeks to work. Could you look in ATI Tool and see if it's registering your card as having 8 or 12 pipes? If it sees 12 then there's something else locking the pipes, but if you see 8 then the newer cards might not have unlockable pipe
post #209 of 567
Ati tool says 8 pipes. Now that i know its possible and people are doing it im going nuts. Maybe someone will figure out how to make the newer cards works.
I'm looking in the XPS2/9300 forums. They've had success unlocking the bios for the 6800 go Ultra, and maybe some of them will be able to read our bios and see if we're missing something. I'm hoping that there's a bios lock on the newer cards that none of the OG guys working on this found. That way at least we know it's possible. Could someone with a newer core (let's go from 44th week to the present) take a picture so we can see if there are any obvious differences between the chips?

You got yours in December right? So far we know there is something definatley different about the new cards, but we need to find out if it's hardware or bios related.
Ok here are some pics I took of my mod sorry its the best I could do with little resources. I also took the AS5 off and put the purple square thing back on that came with the card my temps are still the same as before idle 57-58 so I assume its just a temp increase after doing the mod for the extra 4 pipes!

ATITool does not correctly identify number of pipes. You need to use ATI Tray Tools. Maybe it is simply that the newer cards have a protective coating over the two points? I think the newer cards have the same bios as the older cards. Someone with a newer card dump your bios and post it so we can do a comparison.

your GPU idles at 57C?! isnt that a bit high? mine only idles at 47C and only under load does it reach 57C...what temp is your GPU under load?
Raelcun what are the temps of your video card now? after you mod? I noticed that when I took the HS off of the card there was no Arctic Silver 5 on it so it wasnt touching at all! I will have to put a piece of copper on it to fill the gap! But the strange thing is that I put that piece of square purple foam that came with the card back on and im still getting the same temps 57-58 just while im typing doing nothing else what is the max temp range for this card because im sure once I start gaming the temp will go up more.

What are you using to read your GPU temp im currently using the newest version of I9kfangui from http://mckenziedev.com/fproducts.htm maybe its reading it wrong?

You really dumped the paste on there thick, didn't you MajestacaL?

Hmm it can't be in the bios raelcun. hounddog and MajestacaL have the same bios:

There must be some difference in the chips themselves. Maybe there is some protective coating on it.

hi ..
I have just talked to the maker of Atitool Wizzard. I have told him about our success and that atitool still does not recognize properly the amount of pipes the card has .

Wizzard asked me to ask the people who have succedded to do the following .

Basically you have go to the list in atitool where u can see how many pipelines are available .under settings -> overclocking . Double click on the list . You will see a popup saying "register" enter this into the register "0x4018" (without the brackets) and press ok . Please post the number that is returned by ATI tools.
Please also post the Device ID , which is available in the same list.

I will give the numbers to wizzard as soon as possible so he can help us out.
