5680 review.

Hey yall, Just got my 5680 in yesterday and Im really happy. Here's the quick rundown.
Specs
2.8g 800fsb
512 ram (I have a gig sitting on my desk I have yet to install.)
2 40 gig HD's
Radeon 9600
dvd/cdrw
2nd battery.
15" UXGA
Here ya go. Out of the box, it looks great, I was very happy to find out that I had no dead, still or stuck pixels on my 15 UXGA. The keyboard is super stable, and the fans run quit and fairly cool. The computer gets warm but not hot.
Ok, the regular problems behind us, lets get to the ones I DID have first.
1) I emailed PCTorque 2 days ago about when my tracking number would arrive and I got the usual "A week after you pay" or so answer. Then, to my surprise the laptop showed up yesterday, still without a tracking number. I told Tom about it and he said he found that highly disturbing and would get to the bottom of it. Problem solved, great guys at PCTorque save the day again.
2) I pulled the computer out, plugged in, turned it on and threw Norton Antivirus in the cd tray, installed it and ran a full scan. Turns out that I've got the Blaster virus. I got the fix and took care of it, but this brings up a troubling issue. I'm fairly certain I didn't give the computer the virus, so who did? Does Sager have some contaminated Ghost Images? We'll see, I plan to email them after this message. Anyway, I told Tom about that too and he gave me someone to talk to. Once again, PCTorque saves the day.
Those are the only problems I have found. Right now, I'm fully draining the batteries, to see how long it'll take. I am 2 minutes shy of an hour now, and for 45 minutes of that hour I was playing GTAVC and watching a DVD, I've got 60 percent left. Not bad if you ask me. Anyway, the computer screen is beautiful, great worksmanship, and appears to be about as flawless a laptop as you can get nowadays.
I played GTAVC, GTA, and Unreal Tournament 2003 so far and the computer handles all flawlessly. I even pulled the plug in the middle of Unreal a couple times and plugged it back in to see if it would lag or skip. Not even a blink. I built my desktop last year with the "ultimate gaming system" in mind, and it doesn't handle games as well as the Sager. My desktop is a
2.8ghz 533fsb
1 gig ddr 2700 ram
100 gig 5400 hd
ATI 9700 Pro
Audigy Gamer Soundcard
CDRW X 2
It even lags everyonce in a while, and if I says so, looks a lot worse while doing it. I'm super happy and would recommend Sager and PCTorque to anyone. If you have any questions email me at jarretttai@hotmail.com and I'll give you my "real" Addy. Thanks.

Ok so what did they say about the 2 problems you had? You didn't tell us the outcomes heh, just "they saved the day..."

Getting a BRAND new PC that may or may not even have XP already installed WITH the blaster worm is very weird.

Did you get XP installed already?

This scares me.

I am surprised your games dont lag when you pull the AC out. What resolution are you running them at? I presume 1600x1200, but dont know for sure . Using the same expression as in one of my other posts today, the performance of the machine takes a kick in the groin when on battery. Eg. maxed out BF1942 at 1600x1200x32bit runs fine on AC, but lags a lot on battery.

Hey, well basically, I said the "saved the day" by looking into the problems. I removed the blaster worm first and it was fine with me that my laptop got here earlier than I expected. About the worm, I had Sager install Windows Pro since I don't have a license for it... I have recently outgrown pirating and I'm tired of having my serials take ****s on me. Oh, as far as not lagging on gameplay.. I don't run at 1600 by 1200 but I was running at 1280 by 1024 which is my normal resolution... I don't like the look of games at the higher res. maybe I'm weird. I had no lagging whatsoever, and I totally expected UT 2003 to go bonkers once I was on batteries.. btw my computer lasted exactly 2 hours till I hit 18 percent. That was while playing games and watching a DVD. Anyway, hope this helps.

Oh, I'm sure that the worm was included with the computer, unless my registered Norton cd has a virus? Hehe

Basically by setting the battery options to not throttle the machine you avoid lag . Since throttling the machine does nothing to reduce its power consumption in real terms - you may as well run flat out while on battery. Lowering the screen brightness has far more effect.

Hey, Tom here...

Hey, I just got to the bottom of why you never got a tracking number: your order shipped to an APO address, and thus went via USPS. As you may or may not know, USPS is not tracked. I shoulda checked that before I replied to your email, I guess.

Also, Sager is looking into how a virus may have infected your system, including possiblilties involving wireless networking.

Anyway, I just thought you'd like to know.

HOW?!!!! The 5680 doesnt have any throttling options in the BIOS. Windowz doesnt provide any either.

When you set the powerscheme to "Max battery" the computer is downthrottled to 50%

Nice! I'll give it a try at a lecture next week. Before, I was using the normal Portable/Laptop setting, dimming the screen and turning off the PCMCIA Wireless NIC and getting 3hrs of Word. I wonder how much more juice I will be able to squeeze out .

I you want even more control of the downthrottling, and ability to downclock downto 12,5% see this post .

Cool, thanks alot Tom! The computer still kicks a lot of ass. I sent Sager the log file from that initial scan as well, so they will know WHERE that damn thing was. I figured the tracking number thing had something to do with the APO... thanks alot.

Thanks, Henrik, I am aware of your programs. Good stuff! I actually spent an hour of my precious sleep time reading through your 5660 Video Chipset thread. Very interesting. Having said that, though, I dont have time right now to screw around with the machine because I need it in a working condition for school, etc, and I dont have time for 'troubleshooting' .

Thanks

I see your point, I dont want to be "pushy" either, and try to convince everyone to use my programs.
