Have you ever tried removing Ram from a system that was on? I wonder what type of blue screen you would get

"Warning you removed Ram while windows was running, you totally ****ed youur computer"

since you got over a gig you could try disabling the paging file that might speed stuff up too.
and he's right about the speed, are they the same? the 1gb could even be slower than the 256
post #29 of 46
plus from your page your only using around mid 300's in ram ? which means your not really taking advantage of your memory... if which means you probably would of been fine with just another 256...
and make sure you check your speeds like everyoen is saying

Ok Im not sure how to do this....I want to use my memory at its full potential, but I am not nearly as handy with Laptop hardware as I am with desktop, because everything is packed so tightly, so Im not gonna open it back up....tell me what to do to take full advantage of my RAM! I really appreciate whatever step by step instructions you can help me with!

You need to stop redundant programs from loading into RAM during startup. That will definitely decrease your startup time.

1. Go to Start --> Run
2. Type "msconfig"
3. Go to the "Startup" tab (don't touch any other tabs!!!)
4. Deselect any items that are duplicate or are programs that you don't need/want (msmsgs is a good example). All Items listed are optional, and do not effect Windows XP stability at all. You I personally only have 2 process running, goth of which are Norton Systemworks/Antivirus related.
5. Reboot
6. If you change your mind at any time about a certain program, you can go back in and re-select it, and reboot again.

This makes it so that your comp is only running the programs you want/need, with minimal waste.

If you're not sure which items do, put up a screenshot or list the items and I'll tell you which ones you would want to keep.

thanks, but I figured out what I wanted, I really appreciate that help, but someone said earlier in the thread that I wont be able to use the 1 GB as effectively with the 256 MB Stick in, and I cant figure out why that would make a difference!

That makes no difference whatsoever, as the notebook you have uses single-channel RAM. There also would be no loss of RAM timings. So, don't think that you have to get rid of the 256MB module to get the most of your 1GB module.

At this point (assuming you installed the RAM correctly) the best way to make use of the new RAM module is to modify the way your OS uses the RAM, not the RAM itself.

how do you know 256 stick isn't a very slowed timing one?
maybe i'm just no familar with his IBM model
and even if it is single channel.. all the memory will run at the slower speed of the two.. maybe i'm wrong..

The BIOS forces the FSB to be the same, if you're talking about FSB.
Timings are almost always exactly the same between the SODIMM modules, and never perceptibly noticible. When they are different, the BIOS slows the fastest. In real life, this equates to nothing until you can measure it with a separate program. No affect on Startup time, or application load time.

Ups and Downs: Memory Timings Put to the Test

You can see that it no longer matters as much what memory timings you have as it did only a few years ago, when SDRAM or the first DDR generation were still hot. Or, to put it another way, having faster or slower RAM will not tip the balance in favor of or against the latest AMD and Intel processors.
