Problem with my Z71V... - Page 2

OK I have a new problem....I was fixing to reinstall windows, and was gettin all the CDs ill need together, but i cannot find my Microsoft Office 2003, or Half Life 2 game CDs....I am thinking they may have been misplaced while we were changing houses. I am still looking, but is there any way I could somehow get them from my HD to something, then back to my Z71V after the reinstall without the CDs? This could be a big problem...I really need Office, HAVE to have it in fact for work and other things. Anyways, is there any way to save them from my HD so I can get them on my Asus after the reinstall without the CDs?

Nope... to that question.

Not to your spinning fan. You have some serious heat issue. I recommend doing these..

1) Install Mobile Meter or Centrino Hardware Center to monitor you laptop. On a new system your temp should be approx no more than 67c on 100% cpu utilization. If it is more than it, something needs to be done.

---

Once you determine that try these

1) Use Centrino hardware center to do the undervoltage method. How to do it, there is a huge thread that talks about it.

2) Undervoltage your laptop

3) Use Dynamic setting, where your system will run at the lowest possible speed when it is not needed

4) If you want, open up your system and apply a nice layer of AC5 between the heatsink and cpu. Don't forget to remove the thermal and clean the area before applying.

Doing all of these should maintain your system temp at most 60c on 100% cpu utilization at max speed. For me right now, at max speed with 100% cpu utilization (aka playing games or dvd encoding), i hoover around 57c. On normal casual usage (aka browsing internet or word processing) I hoover around 45c - 47c.

Also, while you have your system open to apply the AC5 on the CPU, do it to the GPU and the intel alviso chipset as well, it will help the heat on those a bit too.

OK i just downloaded Mobile Meter, and with 2% CPU Usage, i am getting 59.0 degres C with my CPU, and 35.0 degrees for my HD....is this normal, or is this extemely high for virtually no CPU usage?

OK guys, I'm about to reinstall Windows, but I am new to this. When i boot into the CD Drive with the XP Pro disk in there, i get 3 options. "To set up Windows, press Enter" "To format Windows, press R" and "To exit setup, press ESC". I want to do the format option right? Then once i get done formatting it, i will do the setup option right?

No, you want to setup windows. If you press R, it will try to repair the existing installation of windows on your pc. If you want to try that first, then go for it, but if you have made up your mind on a complete re-install, then theres no need to waste your time, just press Enter and let windows format the HD and then re-install it self.

A clean install is your best bet I would think.

Good luck.

OK i pressed Enter, and got 3 more options.....1) Set up with a partition(cant remember exact wording).....2) Set up using partition (quick)......3) Setup leaving the files alone(Again, not what it said exactly, but to this extent).....Which one do i want to do?

OK.....Can anybody PLEASE walk me through step by step what to do to reinstall Windows XP Pro? I put the CD in, restart lappy, hold ESC to boot into CD/DVD Drive. What options from the menus need to be selected from here?
Complete format (should take a long time) then set up a partition using NTFS for about 10-15GB (maybe more, I've always done this and it runs perfectly) for your operating system (C: by default), and set up another partition using remaining disk with NTFS again. This always works for me, but then again I never had my own laptop. Should be the same :-/

Alright, i dont know wtf to do. I've completed the reinstall, and the problem is still present. Im going crazy here. Im fixin to hop on AIM and see if I can get ahold of ISTNC on there and see what they can do about it.

That sounds like a logical step at this time.

OK Maybe the clean install solved the problem....I went ahead and used it for today just to see, and have yet to hear it after the install, except once, when it was maybe caused by heavy installing of programs, idk. Anyhow, i have yet to hear it again, but am a lil concerned with the number of Processes i have running, Im at 45 right now. Does anyone know of a website that tells me what each does, and if i need it or not? I plan to undervolt after work tomorrow, when i have time since after reading the directions in the thread, seems like it will take a while to find the right voltage. Again, a website with the processes on it would be appreciated. thanks for all the help guys.

*edit* also guys, i saw during the reinstalling that to play DVDs in windows media player, that i need a 3rd party decoder. What exactly do i need to do to watch dvds with WMP? I dont remember downloading anything for it before the reinstall, yet i was able to watch movies without a prob. Just curious so that i can continue to watch it. Also, do u guys know of any other players that are maybe better than media player? I am really comfortable using that, but wouldnt mind giving something else a try. Is the Asus DVD program that came with my lappy any better?

Your best bet is to get a proggie called hijackthis (I know, odd name) run it and post the logs from it on the forum linked from the hijackthis web site. There you will have some great and knowledgable people who can help you diagnose any problems.
