All right decisions decisions

So, my roommate asks me the other day what laptop he should consider. I have no clue what to recommend, so I figured I would ask you fellas. I have been reading the forum for a while now and you guys know what your talking about, and have found some information, but not enough. So this is what I had him do, was to write down what he did on his computer after he got off it each time for a week so I could actually determine what he uses it for. I came to the conclusion:

*web surfing (random things on the internet)
*He loves his music. He has a lot of music, but I told him an external hdd was possible if he needed it
*Plays Counter Strike from time to time (see below)

This was his main things he wanted in a computer:

-Portability
He has had a desktop forever so this would be his first laptop. One of the reasons he is switching to a laptop is because of the portability. My roommate actually goes to class and the library (which I hope to one day see, I do way too much at the bars). So therefore, he wanted a computer that was portable. I came up with the idea of buying an external monitor and using that when he is in the dorm room (good idea?) and then just unplugging it from the monitor when he wants to take it. I figured at 13.3 screen, possibily a 15.4 screen would fit him well.

-External Media Buttons
He saw my XPS Gen2 and liked the external buttons on it. I think they come on a great deal of the laptops offered so I told him it shouldn't be that hard to find it.

-Speed
I have a 2.13 ghz in mine and love it (plus I have 1 gb of RAM so that makes a difference). I started to read about FSB for a little bit and it was explained to me as the bus is the street and the signal are the cars, the bigger the bus or faster the bus speed than more the signal can go. So therefore, I have been looking for laptops with a 533 mhz FSB. I hope that's right.

-Decent Graphics
He plays Counter Strike a decent amount. He is not a hardcore gamer, but figure on a scale of 1-10 at school, i want to say maybe a 6?

I been looking at Dell, Acus, Acer. Was considering a few laptops, but different processors (AMD I think and P-M) I don't get the difference between them. Any suggestions? Thanks fellas, have to give credit to the guys here, you guys are crazy amazing.

i looked at the z70 and z71 for him. I think they might be too heavy. The z70 was quoted at 6.0 with optic drive. I was hoping to stay around maybe 4.3-5.0 for him. I will mention those to him. How is the review of the W3V? I was also looking at the Z63A for him. What do you think about that? Anyone have one? He was looking at the Acer Ferrari laptop which I know nothing of, but did some research on them. There is a new 4005 to be released, but is that a good laptop for what he wants? Thanks.

The Ferrari may actually be a bit of an overkill for his needs...and it weighs just as much if not more than the z70v and z71v. If he is looking for something that will play CS I doubt he would be too happy with the integrated solution that the Z63A provides...So maybe a W3v wouldnt be that bad of a choice, or he could check out something in the Sony S series...

Trust me, six pounds is nothing. I'm weak (stick arms, actually) and the Z71v is extremely manageable. The only thing that can be a stretch is carrying it AND all of the accessories for a protracted amount of time in the case that comes with it without using the shoulder strap. Unless your friend plans on half-hour walks and isn't willing to shoulder a little burden, he'll be fine.

The Dell 9300 with a X300 should actually fulfill your friend's needs, though, from what I understand, and it's extremely cheap. A Sager 3790 may also be a cheap but sturdy possibility.

WOah, getting a 9300 with ONLY a x300 would be an enormous waste...

Personally, 6 lbs is manageable, but I wouldnt consider it "portable"...if he plans on taking it to class or the library often, he will probably want to look at something that weighs 5 lbs or less. However, if it is going to sit in a dorm room the majority of the time, then a 15.4" or 17" would be a better option..

put 7 pounds in your bag.. and carry it around.. and see if he thinks it is okay..
i carry the z71v with the powerbar/mouse/and a small folder with pencil case..
it gets a little bit heavy.. if you haf to walk for more than 10 mins
i have the z71v.. it is beautiful.. but if he only plays CS sometimes or CS source.. the z71v's graphics would be too much.. size should be w3v or smaller...

but having a 15.4 widescreen is awsome if you have it at home.. if he can take the 7 pounds.. and don't have to walk enormous amount..

btw the z63a is the w3v but customizable and with integrated graphics

i'm surprised no one has mentioned the dell 6000 it has the x300, which someone recommended earlier with a 9300, but is smaller and lighter than the 9300, has a 15.4" screen, it is about 6lbs though so might be a bit heavier than you want

See my XPS Gen2 weighs 8.6 I think or something around that. I had an Inspiron 9100 and lugged that a few places, and that was workout. I know you guys recommend the Z71 but I mean we are talking 6 lbs. I was considering recommending something like around 5.3 and lower. I figured that if he got a 13.3 to a 15.4 if he wanted to he could purchase a external monitor and keyboard and use that when he gets back to the dorm. Is that good idea? That is why I think when I mention that he was thinking smaller screen = less powerful system, but I don't think thats true. Right?

So right now I have recommendations for:
9300
Z70
Z71
Z63A
W3v
Sony S Series

How much is that new 4005 Ferrari weighing in at?
What about the 700m I heard a lot about them, but how do they compare to an Asus W3v or Z63A or something from Acer?

Any more recommendations or thoughts. Thanks a million guys.

Do you know what the specs are? I want to give him an idea and then when the reviews come out I will show them to him. I couldn't find anything on it on google really.

ilCacciatore why do you recommend a W3v? I am looking for the details. Now I am debating on telling him 6 lbs isn't that bad. I mean you guys say it isn't, but I would like to look for something smaller first. Like 15.4 and down so that might open up some more things.

What do you guys think about hooking up an external monitor to maybe a 13 or 14 inch screen book? Will the computer not be as fast as maybe something bigger? Thanks.

Honestly, who can tell the difference between 6 pounds and 5 pounds? Or even 4 pounds. Yes, there is a difference, but most Pentium M based laptops are light enough and quiet enough to be considered very portable.
Try not to listen to weight obsessers (is that a word?) who measure in tenths of ounces.

I have the 9300, but I actually wouldn't reccomend it to anyone taking a laptop to class, as it is huge. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but seriously, this is one big mother.

my 2 cents.

Okay I showed him the site today and the replies and he changed his mind (look how influenceable (a word?) you guys are) Here is what he came up with:

-He plays CS not source, and he said he is trying to cut down (sorry guys). So graphics I think are becoming a little less worry, but what does intergrated and dedicated mean?
-Portability is a big thing, but he doesn't want to LOSE THE SPEED.

So what do you guys think. Keep a high fsb (533 and load it up with RAM?)

I saw a post earlier that said it was possible for 4 gb of RAM in a laptop, is this true or did I imagine this? Thanks.

Influential. And thanks.

If he's not concerned about gaming, the options are endless. If he'd like the option of gaming, but light weight, etc, I reiterate my suggestion for the W3v. I

I wouldn't be too concerned about speed. Pretty much anything he gets with a 1.7 P-M and 512MB-1GB of RAM is going to be more than sufficient for his needs. To increase overall "speedy" feel of the notebook, go with a 5400 or even 7200rpm HDD.

Dedicated graphics means that there is a separate (from the mother board) graphics processing unit (GPU, aka Video Card).

Integrated means the GPU is part of the mother board. Integrated is bad to so so in graphics. Dedicated is usually much much better (with the exception of really low end stuff).

The W3v has dedicated graphics that are more than acceptable by most standards/for most games.

EDIT: Also look at the ASUS Z63a - it is the version of the W3v with integrated graphics, which should be sufficient for his needs.
