4880 Onboard Mic

I see the little hole for a mic, i've read through the manual and specs listings and it says there's one, but for the life of me I cant get it set up. Ive looked through the realtek setup stuff, but mostly all I can see there is effects and whatnot, no real meat configs for the soundcard. I'd appreciate any help

Is there a little speaker icon in your taskbar? If so, click that.
If not, go start>run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmsys.cpl" and click the first ADVANCED button.

Is there a microphone slider? If so, make sure it isn't muted, try pushing the slider up some. If there is no microphone slider, go Options>Properties and ensure that Microphone has a checkbox next to it, hit OK, and then make sure it's not muted there. Now you should hear anything in the microphone through the speakers, but it still won't record.

Now, go Options>Properties and click Adjust volume for RECORDING.

Ensure that Microphone has a checkbox next to it. Click OK and check that Microphone has its SELECT box checked, and make sure that the volume is up.

Hopefully that's your problem, tell us if it still doesn't work.

Trust me, i've fiddled with the mic volume bar many times. I'm afraid though, that I think the mic slider is for the mic port, not the built in mic. Im using a rinky dink mic right now, which is a pain because my brother is using the headset, so Im stuck with some earphones and the mic, which i kinda just stick in one of the cups so that it hangs near my mouth. I'd really like to be able to use the onboard, but I just cant for the life of me figure it out.

Im at work right now, and going out to see batman begins tonight, but if you guys have any more suggestions i'll gladly try them out tonight when i get back.

in the sound manager with all the sliders also make sure you go to file/advanced and then click the advanced button under the mic and enable mic boost (this is an option on the 4750 so its worth a shot on your 4880)

Done it, like I said Im pretty sure that slider and those properties only applied to the mic PORT, not the actual built in mic, though I could be mistaken. It is clicked, but gives me issues when using ventrilo, such as high static, so I left it disabled.

No ideas? There's gotta be someone who has an onboard mic that can help me with this situation.

I have a 4750, so I can't really give any first-hand experience help, but try this:

Go to the sound manager thing, go File>Properties, Recording, check EVERY box. Hit ok, now try checking the SELECT next to the first option, see if your mic works, try selecting the next one, until you try every single option. Maybe your internal one is under a different name, such as Aux or something..

If you have a microphone plugged in to the MIC port, it will disable the internal mic, but I'm sure you knew that. Again, make sure that in Playback nothing is muted, and in Recording your Mic is selected.

Maybe re-install your sound drivers?

Did the reinstall before I posted the thread, nada. I went mucking around the settings, and somehow got it working, not even sure how.

It may have been a low volume setting on the other tab with three settings, rather than the one with the other fifty, which is where the other mic volume control was located. Thank you all for your suggestions

Go to the volume window

Click on Options ==> Properties

Change the 'Mixer Device' pull down to Realtek HD Audio Rear Input

By default the 'Line In' has a checkmark next to it (where the mute option is usually to be checked) - change the checkmark to 'Microphone' and your onboard mic should now work.
