the only reason i got a dell laptop was $750 off

coudnt beat this kind of deal

and you know i ended up liking this laptop quite a bit
post #43 of 63
cheapest laptop out there with the hardware that it has (i have the i9300 btw)

the closest thing i could find to my laptop at best buy (hardware-wise) was this one toshiba qosimo notebook...but it retailed for 2600 bucks...

my laptop (specs in sig) was only 1500 (including tax and RAM upgrade via newegg) with a 2 year warranty.

also...not many other companies out there have decently-priced gaming notebooks that have Pentium M and the GeForce Go 6800

apparently so..this thread is now 3 pages and counting...and all responses are clones of each other regarding DELL and their pricing, etc...

But is that the only reason?
Basically, yes. Some people like the ability to order the fastest intel processor possible which dell usually offers

Aye go to all those other competitors, and configure the below and see what the price is and if you get any discounts.

Pentium -M 1.6/533/2MB
1GB Dual channel Mem
60GB HDD
DVD burner dual layer
17" wide screen
Geforce 6800 Go 256MB (Biggest plus in my book)
6 USB 2.0 ports + DVI and wireless + blue tooth
upgradeability by the user is a plenty

$1325 shipped!

I really want that laptop! How in the world did you get it so cheap?

Anyways Ill coment on this topic since I own both. My HP sucks. Dell runs circles around it not to mention battery life. Granted the HP isn't all that great but wow what a differnce. Flash web pages will run the HP at 90-100% processor load while the Dell with a P3 runs 20% The HP is set to full speed and the dell is speed stepped go figure. Also the keyboad on the HP sucks also. Don't get me wrong im not a HP basher. I own alot of HP stuff.

A side note I have been thinking about getting a Dell Axim to replace my HP iPaq 3955...
Wow, that sucks. Something is seriously wrong with your HP. I'd get that checked out.
Yeah I can not figure out what the deal is with it. I might in the future reformat, and use a copy of xp pro and not the bs filled hp recovery disk. Those same flash pages example slingo will run the proc full tilt and a ton of heat.

why ask why.....drink Bud Dry

the reason you choose dell over hp and toshiba is that dells are built stronger. try pushing on the back for the lid when the computer is turned on and see what happens. also dells are cheaper compared to sony and ibm.
Push on the lid of my hp and I can see exactly where my fingers are. The Dell I have to push harder. Very good point...

The reason I will never buy any other laptop (only laptop) but Dell is:

1.) Price - I've done a great deal of research and Dell beats the pants off any other laptop in terms of price. My Inspiron 8600c (which I STILL love to death, btw) cost me $927 shipped and taxed (see specs below) almost a year ago (October 19 - $750 off deal) with various discounts ($750 off, $100 concession, EPP 8% off etc). The same laptop at the time cost almost TWICE the cost.

2.) The new Dells are much higher quality. My i8600c's quality is ok, but nothing like the new ones (e.g. 700m, 9300, etc...)

3.) Customer Support - Some people may disagree with me, but Dell has some of the best customer support I've ever seen in a company. The key is to know who to talk to for specific issues. I rarely deal with tech support. Having been an end-user of computer for over 20 years, if I can't diagnose the problem within a couple of hours-one day, then the item is invariably defective.
I will concede in that some of Dell's Indian-accented customer service representatives can be somewhat cantankerous, but think about it through their shoes. I've heard countless accounts of American buyers harrassing them for just trying to do their job.

4.) Dell Spare Parts. When I'm working on my i8600c, I feel relieved to know that Dell Spare Parts is there for me if I need a part or something. Try doing that for a Toshiba or (*gasp*) a Sony.

At any rate, as a budget-minded consumer and a student, Dell is my best choice for all my laptop-computing needs.
If I was stinking rich, I would probably go with a top-of-the-line IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T43 or something.

A reason NOT TO BUY DELL

Here's a good reason not to buy from DELL, it's called AMD 64 and amd64 Turion!!
AMD's 64 bit solutions are far superior to what Intel has and is planning. With windows64 soon to be available, Ive had to reconsider buying a Dell laptop since that laptop with a 32 bit centrino platform is about to become obselete.

I nearly purchased a Dell laptop with the wonderful centrino platform but with 64 bit Windows looming ever closer, this is not a wise purchase at all!! Nor is it wise for Dell as they do offer great centrino lappies, but intel's 64 bit solutions are lappy crappy compared to what AMD has to offer with its on die memory controller it has shown its worthiness of consideration.
Acer has already announced their latest Ferrari laptop that will feature the AMD 64 bit Turion processor ( amd's solution to centrino).

^^ I'd hang on for just a second here with the 64 bit business. Yes, 64 bit processors are definitely the future of computing. Yes, the 64 bit version of Windows is coming up (have they released it yet??). NO, 64 bit processing is not that far superior to 32 bit processors right now because there is such a miniscule number of programs that even support 64 bit processing that it's almost not worth it. I considered that very point before I bought my M70, but then I realized that the 64 bit age is just on the verge of beginning and certainly hasn't come into fruition as of yet. In 3 or 4 years when it's time to get a new lappy, the 64 bit processors will have much wider support, Dell will probably be selling them, and it will actually make sense to buy and use them. Until then, I'm happy to stick with good old 32 bit processing power.

if that's the case... you might wanna hold out on that 64 bit processor because the 128 bit processors will be on their way in about 5 or 6 years, and then 256 bit processors in about 7 - 10 years. just hold out for that

More AMD hype... Intel has nothing to worry about. 64bit windows sucks at the moment and there is not enough drivers... Intel is playing smart and not hyping it up. When it will be worth it to upgrade to 64 Intel will have a solution. Im sure it will be better also. IMO Plus Longhorn keeps geting all it features stripped out of it so it will be pointless to upgrade. Another bonus I have a ton of that old 32bit software that I really like. For 64bit to be a speed boost everything has to be 64bit.. So if your going to buy a pure 64bit system now have fun playing solitare.

Thread Starter
I heard somewhere that the majority of the computers sold in the past year or two, as long as they have decent specs, will be fully compatible with Longhorn.
