Realtek HD Audio BSOD Solution?

Thread Starter
Greetings all.

I recently tried to upgrade the Realtek HD audio driver from r1.15 to r1.21, and the SmarkLink modem driver from 4.0.5.909 to 4.0.8.864, and got the BSOD. I also do not have System Restore turned on or a backup (I know--I deserve this!). I have tried using various combinations of older versions of each driver, but they each result in the BSOD every time. Does anyone know of a way to get the HD audio and modem back without wiping the drive and reloading windows?

Remove the MSHDQFE folder from the Realtek Drivers r116+ before installing. Do this by extracting all the fils using Winzip or Winrar. Then run the setup

But first you will need to get your system back to normal.

Reboot into Safe Mode.
First goto ADD/REMOVE and Uninstall KB888111. If will take a while. If it takes more than 5 minutes, it is most likely hungup and stop it. If it hangs you will need to remove kb835221 first then KB888111. You might need to reboot but can't remember. Ok now reinstall kb835221 as a separate file or reinstall r115 to get it back. (the lasted Realtek Drivers on Sagers site still have KB835221).

Now you can install the modified Realtek Drivers if you system has not become to corrupted. You will need to modify the Realtek Driver install every time as I don't think this will ever be fixed

The 4.0.8.864 Modem Drivers don't really install but look like they do (If you a clean install you will see this). The newest drivers will actually update but still have a BSOD just with a different file SLAZLDRV.SYS if you don't install the Realtek Drivers Correctly.

Thanx so much for the help.

I tried the KB835221 + Realtek r115, and then KB835221 + Realtek r121 as per your instructions, but the Realtek driver fails somehow. The Realtek driver install seems to finish properly, and it is listed in Add/Remove programs, but there is no HD Audio device listed under Sound, video and game controllers in device manager. And when I try to uninstall I get this error message: "Realtek HD Audio driver Remove Failure!"

Any ideas on what else I can try to get the audio up again?

Do you try r121 + KB888111 ? I mean install first the 1.15, and install the 1.21 without the KB835221.

I'm out of ideas. Some have no problem with the KB888111 but many do. But this might work to start it over.
1. Uninstall KB835221 if it shows up in ADD/REMOVE
2. Uninstall KB888111 if it shows up in ADD/REMOVE
3. The Realtek drivers might uninstall without an error if 1 & 2 are done
4. Uninstall the Smartlink Drivers.
5. Now try the whole process over again.
