RAM_Upgrade

I have a HP zv5260us (I should've waited for the zv600 series ) and I'm looking to switch out the 2 x 256 modules w/ 2 x Corsair XMS 512 modules.

But, will this laptop be compatible w/ XMS RAM? (the specs match up: 200-pin PC2700 DDR SODIMM)

Also, I posted on Corsair's forum and they told me the unaccessible module may be soldered onto the motherboard, is this true?

Thanks for the help.

Oh, and does anyone know where I can get a bluetooth adapter? Preferably a PCMCIA, SD, or CF bluetooth card?

I went into my wireless card configuration and saw bluetooth collaboration, what does that do?

The corsair RAM is compatible with your laptop. I don't think the RAM under the keyboard will be soldered to the motherboard. It should just pop out.

Are you sure? Where can I get technical info on how to disassemble the laptop to reach that slot?

----------------------------------
BestBuy sucks... they scratched up my lappy trying to get to that slot and ended up giving up.....

I can't do it b/c that'll void the 3 year service plan I have w/ BestBuy. But, I'm afraid if they do it, they'll just screw up (all the damage to my lappy so far has been done by the people @ BestBuy)... so I need technical info to convince them they can (and if they screw up, they owe me another lappy)....

EDIT: If I can't, then I need a 1GB module that would be compatible to the stock 256 module (I don't think Corsair is)... did anyone mix aftermarket RAM w/ stock RAM?

Maybe try to look in your manual you got with the laptop to see if it shows how to take the keyboard off. To answer your question about mixing ram, I have a 1GB stick of corsair in my R3000Z and it works great.

Here's the HP manual describing the method to add RAM to the slot under the keyboard...

I tried three different brands of alleged compatible ram. None would work with the stik under the key board. Finally went under keyboard, 4 screws, popped up on/off switch cover, 4 more screws, off came keyboard, popped memory out installed 1 gig stik, all fine. But using any brand of ram with the factory installed (under keyboard ram), resulted in blue screens and system crashes.

But is that module XMS, System Select, or Value Select?

Thanks for the manual, but it shows a Compaq, would it work for a HP zv5260us?

It should since the Compaq R3000 is the equivalent of the zv5000 series, maybe a few screws will be off the mark, but thats generally the way to remove the keyboard. If you can get the keyboard then its all good.

They are the same.... Externally i think the zv5000 has 1 more screw but other than that.... also the service manuals have diagrams for them both... or should...

Well, after going to numerous BestBuy locations, none of them are brave enough to do the upgrade (if I do it myself, I void the service plan)... so, I'll just purchase a 1GB module.

I'm planning to get a 1GB Corsair System Select CMSS1GB-333SOD DDR333 PC2700 SODIMM....

Will it be compatible with the 256 meg module I have under the keyboard? Will it work? Does anyone have a 1GB and 256 setup in their HP laptop?

I think that ram will work... and these systems do support a 1.25GB setup... Also if you only change the module under the keyboard your not voiding the service plan... You are allowed to change, the battery, hard drive, & memory but not the stuff under the keyboard... Dont know who told you, you would void your warranty...

that is wrong...HP could be held liable because they provide instructions on their site to get under the keyboard

thanks

well, my 1GB corsair shipped today...

Yep, you won't void anything on your warranty. Even back when all the manufacturers used to put those little tabs over the cases that would break when opened, it wouldn't really void your warranty.

It's been 5 years since I worked for Best Buy, but I can't imagine they'd start voiding warranties over stuff like that now.

Well IIRC, those documents are in the section which is for authorized repair personnel... They also should have a disclosure at the top or bottom somewhere saying that ONLY trained, certified, & persons authorized by HP only should attempt to replace the module under the keyboard...

Anyways, the HP Technical document writers are told that the disclosure must be added with all repair documents...

all it says is the person working on the laptop should have experience working with hardware and software. It says nothing about being an HP authorized technician.
