Apple, Fujitsu, Asus, Toshiba, Hp-Compaq, Sony, Acer? Really I can't find anything better than my Thinkpad... but this machine is getting outdated every day... NEED HELP !!!

Hey! whoever did, thanks for my first green dot... I am amazed with so few posts...
To be completely frank, I have no idea. In the past i have always went either dell or ibm and i definitely stayed with ibm for those laptops i needed for my business. Lenovo is a good company but so far i just dont know about them. For me personally (i buy a laptop every year or so) i believe my next laptop will be an apple. Not because of the operating system or anything (which i dont care much for) but for the quality. I am a quality freak and i am hoping that when vista comes out i will find a hack to put the darn thingy on the apple.

Also a t42 is still a fairly new computer. In my experience (i have been with ibm since the aptiva days---looooooong time ago, in fact ibm was the first company I began buying laptops and desktops from) the ibm laptops generally last for well over 5 years ( i had one computer that lasted me close to 7 years and only broke because i gave it to one of my employee who was a newbie). So i would hold off buying a high end laptop now.

But if you want a new laptop i would say go with dell ( just this christmas i bought the 700m) and the thingy is beautiful and very well made. Plus you can get them for fairly cheap.

But bottom line remember that lenovo is still building their thinkpad line within the same faculties and engineers that ibm used so their machines should be quite similar. I am just worried about their customer service to be honest (no one can beat ibm).

Hope this helps.

my experience so far with Lenovo has been very good... their sales department was much better than others I have delt with... but the biggest bonus is their 30 day $ back deal... not many off this and its HUGE... protects against lemons and if I dislike it... I can send it back... That alone is with the little bit extra a payed for my T60p...

its nice to see that they are keeping their service similar to ibm.

Do us all a favor. When you get the machine can you please post a review? People like me really need it because i really want to stay with the thinkpads line but until i hear from people such as you who actually use them i cant really put down $4000. I already made that mistake once with my alienware and i wont make it again. I am hoping the lenovo brand stays true to the thinkpad history.

NOt a problem... once I get this thing its going to be thrown into full use right out of the box. After getting burned by the acer 8204 Im going to be pretty rough on this guy. I have very high expectations for the T60p so out of the box it gets docked, used all day and the verizon card activated. Then its going to travel cross country and an attempt to put BF2 on it will happen. I will post my findings as I go along. Not a problem.. seems many are looking into this notebook as well. Backordered to no end...
I'm interested in the T60p and thus your review, too. Can't wait
post #46 of 65
I cant wait either...im hoping it ships before the indicated April 4th date!!!

Hey i wouldnt be complaining. Last year when the t43 came out i special ordered mine the first month (i was one of the 900 people that was allowed to place their order in before they went public and even before they had them on the website) and i still didnt get mine until May and believe me the wait was killing me.
my order status changed from Backordered to In Process, I have faith!
I agree with you Noesis, my question is a hard one... maybe it doesn't have any answer for the time being, this is not the right time to buy a high end machine, will hold off the operation. In the meantime let's watch carefully the Lenovo's production, they should be in hell trying to clarify its development and production strategies on the march. I am a quality freak too, and Apple is one of mi little options, never in the life Dell... sorry! Does anybody have other ideas?

Man your stressing me out with this wait. I am really curious to see how this new model holds up. It sounds like you abuse your lappy as much as i do with all your travels and constant use (there have been times when the thingy was not turned off or even restarted for weeks on end) and yes to answer one question: thinkpads could have their lids closed while still on and it wouldnt damage the screen. In fact if you put the thing on standby you can even throw it in the backpack while on (but im to much of a sissy to do it for a long time and only for short waits while going through the security).

Also dont expect to see some impressive benchmarks because my thinkpad sucks bigtime in this department.

t43's

its funny how everyone complains about the lil things like the money with ibm's and saying how there not that happy with the x300 or pre t43 laptops but 1. biuld quality is top id like to see who could say otherwise and acutually be able to prove it with a all around review, my fiance got the t43 when they first came out (pre ordered 2 months before it was released) and i am getting a t43p motherboard for my dead t41 ( someone spilled soda on the motherboard when i wasnt there at a party) and im going to biuld the t43p myself, they are great machines super reliable and fast as all hell. gotta love IBM one of the few companies that kept an A rating for as long as i can remember, and only ones ive seen that would hate on ibm would be the ones that are too cheap( ima student and i work my ARSE off for my stuff) somehow like dells plastic fake qualitylol or the ones that shell out for one with weak parts you always get what you pay for so thats my ibm story and im sticking to it including the t43 this will be my 8th thinkpad

You sound very much like me. I have been with the company since the early aptiva days and bought my first laptop and my first desktop from them. Ironically when i bought my junk i was totally unfamiliar with computers but i knew that ibm makes the best products. And now many years later i still hold to that. Eventhough i broke and bought laptops from other vendors and boutiques, it is still my ibm that i let hold my business and important info. Why because i have never had one fail or put me on the spot when i was with a client or in those emergency situations where you just want your laptop to work.

i was sitting at my desk and all of a sudden line shot up through my screen about three inches long so i sent it in to ibm and they told me it had a crack and that i must have dropped it. i just got the laptop like a month ago i have never even moved it off the desk. so i am really pissed off and the worse part they wanted $890 to buy a new lcd in it when the lcd from ibm's website only cost 440 or something like that. so i just had them send the laptop back and i would fix it my self. this is really pissing me off because i just spent over 3000 on the laptop and now it has a screen problem and looks bad. so now i guess i will have to come up with the money to fix the brand new t43p. and the ibm person i talked to was really rude and laughed at me and my problem. I might add some pics when the laptop shows up tomorrow.

ibm's good solid machines, but the speakers suck!!
I would call a few more times....Don't stop with 1 rep. It is SOP for just about any company to say it must be your fault. They use it to weed out ppl that just want an easy replacement for something they did. The techs probably just opened the lid and said, yep it's cracked, send it back!

I friend of mine had a similar problem to yours, it took him a week to get them to authorize a replacement. Turns out the hinges on his laptop were to stiff & it was causing stress on the screen.

Please don't give up with just one call....Escalate...escalate...escalate! Let them know that you did not purchase a $3,000 machine just to have problems with it only a month after your purchase.

Good luck, I hope you can get this resolved!

Sam I have been with ibm for a very long time and never had to deal withthat crap. Just keep on calling. Believe me that they will fix it at their expense. you just happend to get one of their bad apples on the phone. I have dealt with enough people there to know that there are some really cool techies. I remember one time when i wanted my keyboard replaced because i wanted the thai keybaord and not the chinese. I called several times finally i got one cool guy who knew what i was talking about and he said that since there was nothing wrong with the keyboard that was currently on the laptop that i had to make it wrong so he told me to pop out a couple keys. I did and he issues me a new thai keyboard. So just hang in there. and it will work out.

I'd like to share my story.

I do not have a T43p, instead I got a T42p branded on the outside, but really is a T41p (Motherboard is a 2373-GEG).

It costed me $980 USD: I got it NEW from a woman who bought 3 T42p at a very low price (imagine how low so that I could get it for 980USD)

I come from a thinkpad T30, and I'll be selling that thing for approx 760USD, I really saved a lot of money:

Thinkpad 'T42p', really a T41p:
- 14.1" SXGA+ (1400x1050 pixels)
- 1GB DDR PC2700 (2x512MB) RAM
- Intel Pentium M 745 @ 1.80GHz "Dothan"
128MB ATi FireGL T2
40GB HDD @ 5400rpm
Windows XP SP2 Preloaded by IBM in Spanish (laptop is made in Mexico, but with US localization keyboard)
I even got the ISO files of all the Recovery Disks.
Intel 2100 Wireless Card
NO BLUETOOTH

It's impressive this machine:

I've invested more $$ on adding:
- Hitachi 60GB HDD @ 7200rpm
- Ultrabay Slim for 2nd HDD
- Ordered a mint condition Thai keyboard (which is the best keyboard ever made for the T4x series)
- Will be applying Zalman Super Grease to enhance the dissipation of CPU & GPU heat

I guess the T43p should be enormously fast compared to the T41, T42's
since the FSB is 533MHz as opossed to run @ 400MHz in the early T41, T42 series.

Simply the Thinkpads are the best laptops.
I've owned 2 Thinkpads before this (and both are functional still, A22e & T30)
