How you doing guys, its been a while since i have posted up, i been very busy with school and ect. but anyways my mcafee virus scan that came with the new dell 9300 has expired, and i really dont know if i should subscribe to a 1 year subscribtion or go some where else and try a new service and stuff.

these are the prices :

Your 90 day trial of McAfee VirusScan for your Dell PC expires today. Keep your PC protected by subscribing to a full year of McAfee VirusScan for just $34.99.

and they have this one

so right now i dont know if i should subsribe or look else where for a free one, i liked mcafee because it caught virus while they was trying to get into my system, i didnt have to can to find it, it sometimes just caught it right away and showed which one it was and ect. with mcafee i didnt really see any slow down with my lappy.

so for you guys who has had there mcafee expired recently please tell me what ya did and what ya recommend, and for those who are really familar with all the virus scans and softwares please tell me what route should i go to protect my laptop as much as possible.

Thanks , Luis

Mine is about to expire also. I am not going to renew it. It is too expensive. There are cheaper options and a good antivirus can be had for free (just search the forums.).

"Kerio personal firewall (free for home use http://www.kerio.com) and AVG free antivirus (also free for personal use http://free.grisoft.com)." Thanks, (Ilcerebro who recommended these)

These have been recommended in the forum. Some think that even these are not needed. Windows has a built in firewall. I have used no antivirus program for years, and I never had a problem.

You can get an extra 45 days

Hello,

I also purchased the McAfee Security Center software for my I9300. My OS recently became corrupt after downloading video from my Sony camcorder using the Windows XP's software. It looks as though that the video data must have some how evaded the space on the hard drive where the operating system resides. I was unable to boot up to Windows XP. I had to restage (I planed on doing this anyway so I did not loose any data).

Anyway after restaging I used the McAfee disc and by using it you get a trial edition of the software (I believe it is for 45 day). Therefore this will at least give you an extra month and a half to decide on what to purchase, if you have the media that was provided to you when you purchased your Dell PC.

Later,

Paul

PS. After restaging (I partioned my hard drive as C & D), to avoid the chance of any video data overwriting the OS again. I can also load games now (I was unable to load Doom3 on the PC as configured from Dell).

I went with Norton, it was interesting after uninstalling Mcafee and installing norton I noticed I have about 50 more MBs of Ram free and was running 5 less processes

Try Trend Micro PC-Cillin. It's day and night difference compare to McAfee. PC-Cillin give you the same level of protection as other anti-virus if not better. It does not bog down system resource like McAfee. Substantial difference when you start-up system. Award winning as well.

why not get a decent program and not bloatware?

any more suggestions, i dont know what to do right now, and am worried a virus may get through. the scan still works i guess its the updates that expired and stuff, meaning new virus may not get picked up , and i think the automatic catching of virus expired, but i really dont know what they mean by expired since i can still scan with my mcafee

Expiration means NO MORE FUTURE UPDATE. If there is an outbreak of new virus, you will be at high risk to be infected.

It is almost always cheaper to buy new instead of updating even Symantec’s website reflects this, look for deals at compUSA Staples or other retail stores, after rebates you can many times get security suites for FREE yes FREE
