Dell Kiosks experience

Thread Starter
While trying to finalize my decision on a laptop-namely M70/6000/9300/XPS 2-I went down to the local mall to see these units in person at the Dell kiosks.

Once at the Inland City mall in San Bernardino, CA I was approached and asked if I needed anything. I asked the guy some questions and this is what I got.

1) Do you have a 9300 in stock? Answer: Yes I have one here. I walk over and he is referring to the Dell website! Here I suppose means on the website. He also told me that an 9300 is the same as a 6000! After I told him that the 9300 has a 17" lcd he tells me to look at the room available next to the keyboards on the 6000! "A 17" fits". I think I rolled my eyes.
2) Do you have any Latitude laptops, specifically the M70? Answer: "Latitudes are refurbished Inspirons sold only on the Dell Outlet!!!!!!!" I really knew who I was talking to at this point and was not about to save a drowning man.
3) Referring to a 6000 running the ATI chimp demo that only runs on ATI GPU's. Which video card does this specific unit running? Answer: NVidia!!!! I told him that I do not believe so and he says while looking on the Dell website for the specs, "On board Integrated graphics". In other words he did not know
which ATI X300 the computer had. If this guy could read my mind.
4) Customer walks up and asks him who manufactures the plasma TV on display. Answer: WE DO! I told him Dell does not make them. Then he says, "SONY"! Customer shook his head at him and left. Try LG or Sampo or similar.

I left in disbelieve. All of the money Dell spent on this kiosks wasted with lack of training.
Thought I would share.

"Latitudes are refurbished Inspirons sold only on the Dell Outlet!!!!!!!" thats great HAHA

The kiosk at the Galleria in Dallas is placed next to a two story window with bright sunshine streaming in and when I would look at a computer, the salesman would try to block the sun with his body so I coud get an idea what the screen looked like.

Surely there was somewhere in that huge place they could have put it out of direct sunlight, even the 700m looked washed out.

Wow...sounds like they just hired him and told him to say whatever he wanted.

Haha. That guy needs to get fired.

Personally, my experience with the kiosks has been pretty good. The guy was knowledgeable, but maybe I just got the one smart guy.

However, don't get so cocky. You don't know all your stuff, either. The M70 is a Precision machine, not a Latitude machine.

Except for Latituate X1, the lin-ups of Latitute and Precision are catered for BUSINESS. Kiosks basically display products be found on online Home and Home office section.

I overheard a Dell rep at a Dell kiosk tell someone that the I9300 has a 19" display!

yea those ppl at the malls... are like really... something else... i went to the one at king of prussia here at philly and they didnt know a damn thing... not even wat they sold...

Well i do work at one of these kiosks, true many of the employees we get are not the most educated, depends on the kiosk. The majority of them are just temp employees, the most helpful kiosks will be the ones with acutual badge reps.

Maybe its all another reason why Dell only has these kiosks in couple states. Yeah, I am quite annoyed I don't have that opportunity to go up to it and touch it...but rather buy and send it back...over a 2(or more) week span.

I'm glad I live in Indiana. I would be pretty pissed off if I had to pay sales tax so that Ill informed moron could make buck. Here's to proaying they never put one a kiosk in IN.

I have found that the people actually in charge of the Dell kiosks know their product. Its their assistants that usually dont have a clue. To be honest though most of the computer stores (COMPUSA, BestBuy, Circuit city, etc.,) have alot of sales people that dont know the products they are trying to sell either. Your lucky if you can find one that really knows his/her stuff. Most of the others are just there to help you make the purchase from the store. They dont know the technical stuff about what model does what or is best for your needs.

The only good thing about the Dell kiosks is that you can actually play with some of the products. The computers at the Dell kiosks are very dumbed down, there is no way to check system info and the employees have no idea what processors, video cards etc. they use. The XPS Gen 2 and i9300 at the kiosk near me even have keys missing from the keyboards. It's nothing like an Apple Store that's for sure.

Quite true, and what I have found since I have been in America for the past 2 years is that those who do know their stuff...they are quite grumpy and rude. When I talk to them, I can read their mind..."These kids always coming in here and trying to 'test' you out. Hurry up and make the purchase." But that's from my own experience (from Bestbuy, CircuitCity and CompUSA specifically.)

Let's not talk to the guy who is in charge of the Electronics system in Target or Walmart...or even Sam's Club..lol

Would it be wrong to bump a month and a half old thread to give my input on this?

B7 FOR ME!!!

But anyways, as a former Dell Direct Store employee (from now on reffered to as DDS) the main problem I can tell you that these kiosks have is turnover rate. There is only one permenant employee at each DDS, and it is what is termed as the 'Kiosk Lead', but they are basically the manager.

Temp agencies are the ones solely responsible for hiring additional employees. They like to make the KL look like they have a say by having the prospective employee go in and meet the KL, and then ask the KL for feedback, but the truth is, it doesn't matter. The temp agency hires anyone they want to. I have been stuck with some pretty uneducated co-workers at some points.

Now, being uneducated about computers is one thing, being uneducated in retail sales is another. You can train someone about computers fairly quickly, but it can take years to hone one's salesmanship abilities. These employees have only 9 months.

Now, to the geek level. I never minded if someone came in and looked at the products, as long as they were serious about buying one. I worked on a flat hourly basis, so I got paid regardless of whether you buy a computer or not, but the worst thing, IMHO, is having someone come up to you and waste your time by asking questions and then you say you're going to wander off and buy it from the website. Pissed me off everytime. Not only could you get it for the exact same price through a DDS, but now you've potentially wasted my time that I could have used to help someone who really doesn't know a lot about computers make up their mind. I had to deal with the technological elite where I worked (Carolina Place Mall, Pineville, NC), I just usually let them talk themselves into the ground. A lot of people who think they know a lot about computers really don't know jack shit when you let them start talking.

So anyways, the point of my story is, if you're going to buy a computer from Dell Home, and you have a kiosk located close to you, take the time out of your busy schedule and head down to the kiosk and order it. All you really have to do is save the computer to your cart, get to the kiosk, open up their web browser and log in to your account. Re-enter all your coupons you are going to use, then ask the DDS guys if they have any extra coupons, as they so often do. I just ordered my I6000D and i went down to my old kiosk to do it. Sure I drove an hour and a half to do that one thing, but they have sales quotas they have to meet, and even though my puny 870 purchase doesn't seem like a whole lot, take it from someone who has worked at a DDS, your small seven or eight hundred dollar laptop purchase can mean a lot to someone who is having an otherwise horrible day.

Dell Kiosk? Where can I find one...
i went to one, and the dell rep told me the 9300 and xps2 had the same video card. I told him the xps had an ultra. I went back a few weeks later and he said again that they have the same video card. I wanted to strangle him.
lol, yea we sales reps at the kiosks arnt alwase the most up to date people, but in response to your orignal message, yes the 9300 and the 6000 are ALMOST identical, ram/CPU/Wireless/Sound all the same, the only difference is the screen size and the 9300 has the option of a geforce 6800 go, ware as the best the 6000 gets is the x300

belive it or not they dont really give us tech training, only reason i got the job was cause at our kiosk were sorta lacking on annyone with tech knowlege and i happend to be a bit of a pc geek (lol) at the kiosks we cant sell the lat's, the kiosk only can sell inspirons as lats go to small buisness section, kiosk is DHS only, if you want some good tech questions ask a DBR at the kiosk (dell badged rep) , instead of a name tag they will have a badge on their belt probably, with their pic infront of dell HQ, they will most def be the most helpful

So, sometimes the kiosk guy has some extra rebates to add ontop of what you already got? Hmmmm... might have to take a walk thru the mall when I'm ready to buy.
