400 -> 533mhz FSB (dip switch on Z71v)?

What is this and how does it work? I have read about the pin-modding a 9300. Does this do the same thing basically and since the FSB is 533mhz, I assume I can use PC4200 ram. My question is, how does this affect both the mobo and the processor. Would this lower the laptop's "expected life" or just that of the processor?

I'm assuming that it wouldn't have any damaging effects to the motherboard because it is outfitted to work with the 533mhz FSB processors. If I were to plug in a 725 that clocks at 2.13ghz, those are the same exact specs as the 770. (533FSB and 2.13ghz clockspeed).

just changing the FSB from 400 to 533.. mine runs at 2.4ghz perfectly.. been using that for a while.. but since i don't need the 600mhz.. i'm back to 1.8ghz soo i can run it a few degrees cooler

How about long-term usability? I don't care so much about the processor as long as it lives for around... 2-3 years because I can easily replace a part like that, but the mobo and the rest of the system, I hope would last for much longer.

i don't think that'll give the mobo and other components any other problem
i was running at 2.4ghz and still undervolted.. and the temperature was very respectable.. (better than 1.8ghz's original temp with no undervolting)

Hmm, ok, thanks so much for the info. I've been reading on these boards that overclocking the 1.6ghz seems to be completely stable (the Dells with their Pin Mod).

There really is no harm to the CPU as long as voltages are stock. Some people are able to undervolt.

It's fast and easy as long as you're not too greedy.

1.6 -> 2.13 seems to be a sure thing almost.

I "overclocked" a Pentium III 500E a few years ago the same way. It was a 5X100 chip and soon thereafter the 133 Mhz FSB was introduced, in desktop motherboards of course, and I promptly inserted it and low and behold it ran great a 5X133=667Mhz. It is still running today on the old and reliable ASUS CUSL2 MB.
I am actually running the 1.6 gig 400mhz Pentium M in my brand new Z63A right now and with the clever little wire trick it posts at 2.13 Ghz.

wow old school P3 500mhz to 667
i'm running my z71v @ 2.4ghz.. asus motherboards are great

I just got my z71v today, and have to sy its awesome. I got the i.6 ghz 400 fsb and overclocked it to 2.1 ghz 533 fsb. It was too easy just change the dip switch. I have not modded any voltages, and have been rock solid all day. On a side note, I have been a loyal AMD customer for years. I have always stayed away fron Intel Pentium 4 feeling that they are overpriced, underperform, and too hot. The Pentium M so far ha been a great cpu. It's cool and performs better than the AMD Athlon 64 Mobile 3000+ in my Gateway 7410. So far I have to say I do not regret switching to Pentium M,and of course you can't go wrong with Asus. All my motherboards are Asus and never had a problem.

i feel the same way.. i lost my trust in intel ever since the release of p4's... but i'm not biased.. the P-M's were the best choice when i purchased my laptop and it stll is.. asus is great..

u can change the fsb in any laptop with 915 chipset

It's just that the Z71V makes it easy with the dipswitches. Other laptops with the i915 chipsets will require you to bridge two pins with some copper wiring.

do you have the 2.0ghz (400fsb)? i don't think it is safe to flip the switch if you do have the 400fsb b/c you'll be overclocking quite a lot..

you open the laptop by unscrewing the screws on the bottom of your notebook theres about 11 of them i think
