400 -> 533mhz FSB (dip switch on Z71v)? - Page 4

What are the chances of resellers offering 400FSB pentium Ms to go with Z71Vs?

They do, you just need to ask for it.

But they will set the FSB for Z71V to 400FSB to match the processor.

You will need to open it up and flip the dipswitch to 533FSB if you want to overclock it.

Keep in mind the minute you open it, you void your warranty

Smilepak, did the pentium m you got off ebay come with thermal compound or does the cpu just have the thermal pad on it? And if I were a lazy guy, could I just pop the cpu into Z71V without adding any compound?

Btw, thanks a lot for answering my question!

Newegg lists 400FSB P-Ms. You would need to find a vendor that sells bare bones Z71s to go with one.

And I would not mount a CPU w/o some type of thermal compound or pad.

Nope, go out and buy some AS5...they are like under 7 bucks a tube.

How would they know we opened it? Are you sure the warranty get voided?

They wouldn't unless there is VOID sticker over one of the screws or the cover's edge.
OR
Unless the secret spy camera they installed in it snaps a picture of you while doing it.
OR
The black helicopters happen to be hovering in front of your window while you are taking the cover off.

No really - notebooks are upgradable - If they did not want you inside them they would at least use the star screws and not ordinary philips head screws (like hard drive makers use so the ordinary Joe doesn't take his drive apart). MOST manufacturers know you will add ram or a wireless card. It has been a while since I saw a VOID Warranty sticker on a laptop.

Assembling z71v myself; model is z7100vp.

I am installing a Pentium 750 FSB 533. Laptop motherboard SW3 dip switches (2 switches) to the bottom left of the heat sink are set to 1 & 1 (both down). There is also a setting of 5 (up). What are the proper settings and purpose ?

I've read the forum and seem PDF's but they do not have these "1" or "5" values.
Basically, one setting is putting your FSB to 400Mhz and the other setting puts it at 533Mhz. Setting them to "0" will be the 533Mhz setting.
Here's rjtech's guide: Z71 guide .

Does "1" (dip switch down) equal "0" i.e. 533Mhz ??

BTW what happens if you run a 533Mhz chip on a 400Mhz setting? Will anything be damaged.

No, you will just run at slower clock speed.

actually, I don't think anyone's tried that, so we can't give you a certain answer.

I saw somewhere someone did that and it runs @ 400MHz

Sorry to bring up an old thread guys but I got a quick question. Is it worth getting a 533 2.13 processor because doesnt it have the new Sonoma technology? (It will only cost me 100$ extra to get a 7x0 than it does a 7x5)
The speed performance improvement is marginal, I would say less than 5% - 10% between the two different bus speed.

If it is under 25 bucks, go for it. If it is 100 bucks, nah.

But it is entirely up to you. One thing to keep in mind is if you go with a 400fsb CPU, your memory will downclock itself to 400fsb as well.

Does anyone here know if this works with a Celeron-M?
That is an interesting question. I would assume so, as they are both built on a similar architecture. The main differences between the two is the amount of cache.
does anyone have benchmarks and temperature test to compare a 1.6 oc to 2.13 vs a stock 2.13? Also which would have better battery life?
Yes, as Celeron M processors use a 400 MHz FSB and are best described as crippled Pentium Ms.

Oh, and someone has OC'ed a Celeron M before. Search for Z71v 3dmark03 scores in the reviews forum.
