400 -> 533mhz FSB (dip switch on Z71v)? - Page 5

Thanks YuriSEAL. I found that thread now. Interesting reading.

I am using a 1.7 (400mhz FSB) processor, and was trying to overclock it, and it will not turn the screen on at 533mhz FSB. I have since determined, either i got an "unlucky" processor, or it has to do with my ram timings... ATM, it appears that when my processor is at 100mhz FSB, the ram runs at 150, and 4-3-3-9. Anyone know of a way to change the timings in the ram, so that they will be saved to the SPD chip on the memory module? Or is my theory completely invalid?

Just to let everyone know I got my Z71V today. INstalled everything and its working great. But on the dipswitch there is not a a 3 on top and a 0 on bottom.

There is a 5 on top and 3 on bottom. And either way I set the dip it boots and shows 1.7 in windows.

Do I need to flash the bios or something or is it possible this is a hardware refresh of the Z71 that was undocumented.

When using the dip switch method, on boot you will see 1.7 the original speed. In windows configuration you will see 1.7. However, when you are doing a benchmark or in a system info application, it will utilize the overclocking speed.

oh ok well that will explain some of the oddities I have seen. Cool thanks as always Smilepak. Lovin the Asus so far.

Run Sisoft Sandra or if you use CHC, it will tells you the 2.26 ghz speed you are getting.

I believe CPU ID will do it as well.

Hi everyone. Long time reader of the forums, first time poster. This place has been a goldmine of information and I'm now set on getting a Z71V and doing the dipswitch mod to OC. Just a quick question though... What RAM (DDR or DDR2) do I have to buy if I OC the 725 to 533 FSB @ 2.13 gHz? Also, what brand(s) do you recommend? Thanx a lot!

Oh yea, another thing... do you suggest I buy 2 x 512 RAM or 1 x 1024 RAM? I have a limited budget so 2 x 1024 will probably put me over. However, if you think it's necessary, I might consider splurging. Thanx a lot!

Z71V ONLY support DDR2.
You could use Corsair or Crucial, both are fairly solid.

I would go with 1x1024. This will give you an extra slot to get another bar down the road as an upgrade for maybe Windows Vista?

I went with the Transcend memory.

Here is a list of all the 1 gb sticks of 533 DDR2 @ newegg.com.

I would stay away from the gigaram - I've heard bad stuff about it (DDR ram though so it may be OK)

I also like Kingston (have never had Kingmax ram (the cheapest there))

Good luck !
