Z70V vs. Z71V

I plan on buying a new laptop for college in the next couple weeks and I've pretty much decided on either the Z70V or Z71V (hehe, this site helped me on that one - I've been lurking here for weeks!). The biggest reason why I can't decide on one or the other is the graphics card (as it is for everyone, I know). I'm not a gamer so on the one hand, the lesser video card on the Z70V probably wouldn't be too bad for my needs. But, I will also be watching movies and the like (plus some computer art stuff here and there; nothing big, just photoshop and whatnot), so would the 64mb be all right?

the biggest difference in the graphics cards is that the Nvidia 6600 is more "future-proof" than the ATi x600. In other words, the 6600 gives you more options to play the newest games 1-2 years from now than the x600 does. If you're not concerned with that (and it doesn't sound like you are), the x600 will play movies just fine, and you'll still be able to do somewhat graphics intensive stuff. So in light of that, I think you'd be better off with the Z70v.

Couldnt agree more...

if the graphics card is the only thing that concerns u, then the question that i'd ask about the z70v is why pay more for less?

It's part carbon fibre?

ppl don't realize the x600 is probally more powerful than all the cards i see at futureshop/bestbuy... theres only 2-3 laptops out of all of them that has anything better.. x600 might sound weak.. but it is not.. the memory doesn't really mean anything.. the ATI drivers allocate memory to the video card if it is not enough...

i've decided to go with the z70v for engineering school if i should choose between the z71v and z70v cuz of its better battery life and looks and also cuz i dont wanna be tempted to play actual games during class :/

Okay, thanks for the help guys! I'll go with the Z70V (there are other stuff I like over the 71 that helped with the decision - like the weight...). It sounds like it's video card will be fine for me; I don't have to worry about what will happen in a couple years so much as gamers. Sweet! Thanks!

I also like that I haven't heard much in terms of problems with the z70v. Its looking like a pretty solid bet for me as well!

In my opinion, the Z70V would be a better buy, not because of the GPU, but more or less of the design. Z70V is the same as the M6BNe with a x600 GPU rather than 9700.. not much of a performance differnce but it's Sonoma. I have the Z71V... and i don't like it at all and i found the Z70V to be a better build notebook.

as long as ur not a heavy gamer the x600 w/ hypermemory should be fine. things like 3dmax and stuff will still run fine on it since hypermemory uses some system ram along with the 64mb of dedicated vram.

nice one but no... i said nothing about the performace.. i don't like it because the LCD look very grainy on a white background.. i expected better from an "WSXGA+" screen.

That and there is little performance difference between the 9700 to the 6600. Nothing to go goo goo and gaa gaa over.

FYI i have the celeron in there temporarily.

the 6600go scores about 1.5 times better than the x600 i think. something like that.
that's true, but the benchmark doesn't necessarily reflect what you can do in games comparably.
yeah but i have gamed on both.. same games... again there is not a huge difference... which why i am in a way disappointed.

hrm...interesting. well that only strengthens my resolve to get a z70v.
