Z70V vs. Z71V - Page 2

Hmm, the benchmarks should be a slight indication of the graphics performance between the two shouldn't it? The x600 benches around 1200 whereas the 6600 benches around 1800 (in 3DMark05). You might not notice much of a difference when playing older games perhaps, but I've heard that newer games are totally different.

I myself am still quite torn between the Z70v and Z71v.

Z70v:
- Better screen (though not by much supposedly)
- Better integrated speakers (but is this absolutely necessary?)
- Better battery life (is this because of further undervolting done by ASUS or because of the x600?)
- Better weight (1 lb lighter)
- Better build and beautiful chassis

Z71v:
- SATA support (not really necessary at this point)
- GeForce Go 6600 (quite a bit better than the x600)

EDIT: Oh yeah, the Z71v allows for very easy overclocking of the 400mhz FSB CPUs. Just use the dipswitch. For the Z70v, you may have to resort to pin modding which is much more of a hassle. So I guess that's both a plus and minus for me. No overclocking, but at the same time, less tempted to do so.

I was wondering if the Z70v, with a 2.0ghz processor and 1gb of ram, could play games such as CS:S, Doom3, and other games such as that with the x600 at a reasonable speed and fps (45-50ish?) at medium settings all the way.
Any help would be appreciated thanks!

^ I was just about to ask that question. I'm also fine with playing games at medium settings, it might not be the best but it's still good enough to play.

100%, i tried both on just a regular mobile 9700 on med/low settings and it ran fine... and that was only with a 1.5G and 512MB RAM. The only difference i noticed between the 9700 and x600 was with the x600 you can get the same performance on higher resolutions.

I just got a Z70V. I was able to play The Punisher, Need for Speed Underground 2, Jedi Academy, and Unreal Tournament at very decent settings. And was able to play NBA Live 2005 at maximum. Just downloaded the Brothers in Arms demo, but haven't played it yet, some peeps have to work ya know...
As for "hard core" gaming on a laptop, I dont have time for it. I'm sure some of you may think the same way, but if I was a hard core gamer (like I was in college), I would get something else, probably not even an Asus. I'm sure it would be a big, fat beast though... like a Dell or a Sager, but if you want something decent and light to carry around- the Z70V may be for you. I only got it because the peeps on the forums really hype it up a lot. As for style, there are much better looking laptops on the market. If it's only compared to the Z71V, then yes- the Z70V is hell of a lot better looking. As for sound, it's pretty good, but it's not JBL Pro or HarmanKardon. I would like some bass please, headphones are a better alternative. The SPDIF port is good for speakers, but I prefer not to be strapped down.

Much better looking, customizable ones than the z70v?

I'm still leaning towards the asus brand laptops because of their reputation for making the best motherboards in the world.
Yes it's pretty nice, I like the all black look of it. Wish it could be a little smaller though. I guess it's because of the speakers that are built onto the screen. I can live with out them if you ask me; if they were off, I'm sure it could've been at least an 1" smaller.

Isn't the z70v grey?
Oops, sorry. Yeah, it's gray-ish. It's a very dark matte finish. The keyboard and the rubber around it is black, so is the screen (since it's off, right now).

Compared to the Z71v, do you think the Z70v would last longer? I've heard the build quality is great. How long do you think either laptop would last if it served as a desktop replacement that is only transported around every now and then. I'm asking this because I'll be going to college and need a system that would last 3-4 years.
^ I've asked the same question on the forum, and users on the forum says z70v has the better build (carbon fiber ), but the z71v has the better GPU and SATA hd.
i will second the above message. In reality, the difference in performance is all in personal preference, both have pros and cons.

You really cannot go wrong with either choice.. better yet the gpu's are upgradeable (if you know what you are doing).. then again most of it is upgradeable.
Has anyone done an actual comparison between the screen on the Z70v and that on the Z71v. From some sources, I've heard that the difference between the two should not be a reason to choose either or. However, from others, the difference between the two is so large that it should be a deciding factor.

So far, all I know is that the Z71v has "sparkles" which is a subjective issue in-and-of-itself and the Z70v does not. What about viewing angles, color, brightness, etc.?

Also, the Z71v also has a shorter battery for some reason. 1 hour of battery life is huge. Would this be due to the 6600 vs. the x600?
it's possible that the difference in vid card makes the battery life longer. As to the screen difference, the resellers (at least ProPortable, ISTNC, & Geared2Play) say that the Z70v's screen is better, but they also all say that the "sparkle" issue on the Z71v screen is a joke (i.e. not an issue), so when it comes down to it, I'd agree with princeofpersia that it's a matter of preference and both are great choices.
remember also that the z70v is half a pound lighter. This makes it a more ideal travel companion then the z71v, relatively speaking.
yeah but .5lbs is nothing really.. but z71v is noticeabley thicker. Battery wise... the Z71V is listed as 8/4 cell battery which concerns me.. i have to double check but im sure it is 8 cell... nvidia card typcally draw more power and ATI use less though that would be a factor for the battery life.
It has to be a 8 cell otherwise, three hour battery life would be impossible. As for myself, the outstanding design is won me over the better performance z71v, which is not bad either. I wouldn't count on upgradable graphic card cause each generations would require different thermal characteristics; thus, a redesign would be required for these notebooks with the exceptions of DTR because their design allow the expansion of more powerful graphic cards. As always, the more performance you want the lower the battery life. Maybe in time this might change but not right now.
Also, is the x600 a much better card than the x300? I've heard that the x300 is pretty bad compared to even a MR9600. I'm wondering how nice the x600 would be (better than the 9700 I assume?)

X600 = 9700, only difference is that the X600 will give you same performance at a higher resolution.

As for upgrades, of course different generation will not fit.. when i meant upgrade i mean from a 6600 to a potential 6800 which can in fact be done.

Now that the Z70V comes with the X700, how to the Previous posters feel about recommending the Z71V?
