Notebook Security; How do you keep it safe?

Ok, so I was thinking of the Kensington microsaver guarantee, but then I saw this video on someone breaking into that same exact lock. So i looked at the combosaver which is a combination lock. I was looking at the computrace software thats suppose to locate the laptop when stolen. But I'm wondering if there is anything else that could protect my laptop from theft.

Also im wondering how to be safe from hackers in a non-secure wireless hotspot.

The best protection from hackers is to not use windows.

If you have to use windows then you can use a software firewall or you can just keep you anti virus/anti spyware applications current.

The best way to protect the hardware is to not leave it alone where it can be stolen.

Any lock can be bypassed by a good thief.

Heres a funny story related to security.

We had 7 notebooks stolen from my company on one day once. Well one of the people that had lost their notebook got a call from a locksmith asking if she knew anything about these notebooks that this guy had brought into the locksmiths shop.

She of course told him that they were stolen and so they called the cops and set up a sting on the guy. He was caught and all the notebooks where returned.

The lessen is if you do steal notebooks clear out all the business cards in them before going to the locksmith.

You might want to look into getting an insurance policy on as well. I'm not the homeowner (therefore not covered in the homeowners policy). Talk to your agent

should I buy this? Supposedly if its stolen, they will replace up to $1500 for your laptop

They say in the legal babble that the lock must be broken or otherwise tampered with.

A police report must also be filed. It's a felony to file a false report.

You could put a sticker on the notebook asking any thief that if they do decide to steal your laptop to please leave the broken lock so you can file your claim.

The first statement is the mantra for the nb user. The second is also true, except that you don't need to be a good one. sometimes, however, it's impossible for some people to not leave them alone. i never did, but i don't use my notebook outdoors that often...

However, i believe people commonly think wrong about locks. Don't be fooled (not you guys, but others), it won't avoid a theft. They are good to "call atention" for your notebook when it's beeing stolen (edited: not "noise", but also suspicious moves by the thief), so a good soul can take some action, because if someone just take your nb normally (appearing as the real owner), that doesn't get much attention from others' eyes, don't you think?

edit: about the story, that's why i say that you need to be smart for everything on your life, even if you're not smart, hehe

Hey all, disgusted by that video I started perusing for an acutal solution. The best thing I could find is called the LapLocker, it locks the screen in the upright position so the theif wouldn't be able to hide it if he managed to get past the cable. At least it seems like a good idea: www.laplocker.com
They have a video on there...

Hope this helps, if anyone has this thing could you tell me how it is?

maybe some type of tracking chip inside the system and have it be picked up by your cell or pda (and never keep them both in the same space)

make sure your home insurance covers it for @ home events

buy a ADP (accidental damage protection) for your laptop (in case it is your fault)
