ATI 9700 Mobility Radeon + ATI Catalyst Software Ver. 5.6 = AWESOME
Just to save everyone from the hassle I went through...
If you want to play games with your Sony S Series:
1. Get the S360 (The Radeon will offer higher quality performance than the Go 6200). Plus, the S460 seems to have a cheaper display. Seriously, if you compare the S360 and S460 together, the S360 can display total blacks while the S460 has a somewhat charcoal and clouded appearance.
2. The Sony S360 ATI driver is not ready for gaming. I first had problems with Doom 3 locking up the machine. Went to OmegaDrives.net, and installed the universal Omega ATI driver. While it totally stablized Doom 3, the performance suffered significantly.
3. But wait!
I went to ATI.com, and dowloaded the newest Catalyst version 5.6. Next I followed the .exe file and let it create the ati directory and copy its files there. THEN, I ran a little program called "DH MODTOOL 2.2". This worked like magic! It converted the ATI Catalyst Program to ignore Sony's OEM nonsense and allowed me to install the full-blown package on my S360. this whole process is extremely easy, all the instructions are here:http://www.driverheaven.net/patje
4. The results: Doom 3 runs AWESOME. I am currently running it under "High" settings at 800x600 and it flies. The game itself appears dark and dreary like it is supposed too. On the S460 it looks way too bright and grayish in contrast instead of using the blacks it cannot display.
5. If you are a gamer, blow off the PCI Express nonsense and watch the good ol' tried and true Dothan-based S360 fly with updated video drivers and up to 50% more battery life. Ohh and you won't melt your palmrest, which the Sonoma platform has already managed to do on some models (yikes).
