Another annoying what-to-buy topic

Hi, long time lurker here.

I have sort of an idea what I may want in the future, but I have no idea what to get my sister for college. Any help would be appreciated.

Looks will be very important. Probably sleek, nothing that will "clash" or look "geeky".

She will not game at all, so something like an intel gfx controller will not be out of the question, but it would probably be better to get like a 9200 or something.

Screen can be 14" to 15.4", but it should be something very nice to look at.

~5 lbs. and perhaps average 3+ hours of battery life, so she can watch a movie or take it to a few classes.

Looking to spend ~$1500

So far all I can think of is an IBM T42.

Thanks a lot in advance

T42, or Dell 700m..

EDIT* you could also get a Sager 3880 or 4880 from PCtorque at your price range.. but I'm not sure of the weight for these units..

I like that Asus so far....

How about a cute 700m from dell? Maybe the screen is too small tho...I think the Asus z63a would be a good choice

Try the Dell Inspiron 600m, or if that looks "geeky", try the Dell Inspiron 6000. If you don't like that white trim, try the Latitude line. The Latitude D610 is nice.

what about a powerbook? They DEFINATLEY are good looking & portable

The powerbook looks good, but it's too expensive and she won't want to learn a new OS.

Also, I would rather not order from Dell. I don't want to rebuy WinXP etc, and I'd much rather deal with a small company like istnc or discountlaptops.com

I just have a question, what does a "glare-type" screen on the ASUS 63a mean? Also, I looked on istnc.com but they don't seem to be selling spare batteries for it. Where can I get a spare battery?

the glare type screen are the glossy screens with the vivid colors aka trubright, crystal view and so on.

Looks like the z63 is the way to go then. I'm surprised they don't offer one. Is there a notebook accessories page somewhere? I've heard that the owner is really easy to get a hold of. Maybe you could send him an email and he'll tell you if they have one and how to tack one on to your order.

OTher than that, you should be able to pick up a spare battery from any of the other resellers then too.

Glare type screens are beautiful. They do have a downside and that is they tend to reflect ambient light and create glare. This isn't a problem if you can rotate your laptop so the light isn't shining at an angle to create glare for the user. I didn't get a glare type screen because it doesn't come with a Z71V, but I'd probably have preferred it.

I'll email my request then. Thanks a ton fellas.

@kalessian: That model has a modular optical drive that can be swapped with a battery. Won't help if she wnats to watch a movie since the optical drive is removed, but it will get her through several classes without having to switch the battery and one less thing to carry around all day.
