Unfortunately Frozen

Hey all, I recently ordered and receieved a Sager 9800 and I must say I am quite impressed by its power, but there is a major problem, I can't even log on!

Wondering/hoping if you guys could help me with this, whenever I turn on my laptop it goes to the Windows loading screen and after the small bar passes a few times it just decides to freeze. This worried me because I have not put any software on my computer that would contain a virus. Hell, I just bought it! I only have had it for a week before it stopped working. The only things I have installed are stuff like Steam, Windows Media Player, Winamp, a couple games, etc. etc.

By the way, I have tried booting it in Last Known Good Config and Safe Mode but still nothing, in save mode when it lists all the drivers (I guess that is what they are), it simply freezes.

Obviosly I am posting this from a different computer but if you all could help me get my baby back in shape I would much appreciate it!

Thanks for your time and hopefully a reply that will fix this problem.

frozen?

I'm sure you've already tried this, but what happens when you attempt booting into safe mode?

Does Windows load successfully in safe mode?

If so, "start", "run", type in msconfig and go to the services tab. at the bottom, make sure that "microsoft services" are hidden and then uncheck all the remaining services. Then on the general tab, click "diagnostic startup".

Then reboot normally ... see if windows boots.

If it does, then systematically go back to msconfig and ONE AT A TIME, recheck non-microsoft services and reboot.

Let's see then if we can isolate where the problem is that way.

If booting into safe mode doesn't work, then you might want to try a repair install of Windows XP (NOT FROM THE REPAIR CONSOLE!!! or you will rewrite your drive). You need to boot from the CD to do this.

This is the series of steps i would take. Maybe others would have better suggestions. I am not a tech guy, just a wannabe computer geek.

Can you boot from a floppy and do a CHKDSK to see if you get any drive errors?

Im not sure how to do that.

I have my windows xp disc and I know there is a way to do a system restore without deleting all my files, like go back a few days or something.

any suggestions?

have windows xp cd and boot from that cd

I infer from your post that you're unfamiliar with how to boot from the CD.

As you're turning on your system, hit the F2 key to enter the setup.

Navigate the screens to where you get to the order in which your computer boots. Make CD the first device in the list so that your computer boots from that. Exit and save changes.

Make sure your Windows XP cd is in the CD bay and restart your computer.

Follow these steps:
XP Repair install

Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, read this Warning#2!
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Warning #2 from above:
Warning!! #2
If the Repair Option is not Available
What should I do? Most important do not ignore the information below!

If the option to Repair Install is NOT available and you continue with the install; you will delete your Windows & Documents and Settings folders. All Applications that place keys in the registry will need to be re-installed.

You should exit setup if the repair option is not available and consider other options. I have found if the Repair option is not available, you have a few paths I have listed to try before XP requires a Clean install.

Very important!!

If you still have the ability to access the Windows XP installation, backup all important files not restorable from other sources before attempting any recovery console or other trouble shooting attempts.

Frankly though, if your system is that hosed, I would just reformat and do a full system install from scratch

More problems... let me list them, hopefully you can help me out gotion because

I do not know how to reformat and do a full system install from scratch.

I tried what you said (by the way I am not computer illiterate I just have never dabbled in this kind of stuff before) and here is what I get:

Also it should probably be noted that I have Raid 0 installed on this computer.

Okay after booting from the cd here is what happens. I push ENTER to go to a set up and I push F8 of course to accept the liscense agreement and then things get quite weird. When it asks me to pick a partitioned space they all say Unkown Disk, there are 4 listings of this. It doesn't let me try to create a partion either. Then an error message pops up shortly after saying:

A problem has been deteted and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

If this is the first time you've seent his Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appeears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components (***Which doesn't work******), restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

And after that boom I'm back at the beginning again. I really don't want to have to send this thing back so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont care about doing a full system restore because I barely haven't anything on it anways, I just can't get to that point unfortunately.

Check the knowledge base on MS for the reason for the STOP.

If you need to reinstall, you have to load the RAID / Non RAID controller drivers from a floppy drive.

Sounds like your RAID is screwed, try a /REBUILD

Funny how shit like this can happen after one week.

Okay I tried to re-load the RAID drivers like you said, pressing F6 to do so when the Windows Setup came up and it said it could not detect the floppy when it was clearly plugged in and the floppy was clearly in the machine.

Any suggestions on this one?
ugh.. I'm never getting a RAID.

You might be able to reset the boot sequence in the BIOS to go from FLOPPY -> CD -> HDD

That might make it easier... not sure if the laptop has the option to do so.
the floppy drive will only boot from certain usb ports. Try switching ports.

keep us updated. this is interesting because i have raid 0 as well. either you got a virus or one of the drives is bad or failed. after you get the floppy drive to work, instal a fresh copy of the OS and let us know.

Well it definately wasn't a virus. Sorry it took so long to post this, I have been working out trying to find a desktop to use in the process of this catastrophe.

I tried to re-install the RAID config on with the help of tech support and it was all working fine when the computer started randomly freezing during the install with Windows XP. So to my dismay I have to return this computer to Sager while they work it all out. They think it is a problem specifically with the HDD, which is not something I can fix from home.

I still have my 30 day money back garuntee however, and even though I loved the Sager (when it was working) and all, for some reason I have started to lean towards Dell's XPS2 for some reason. The money (even though it isn't a lot more) is not something I am worrying about, it is just after this whole monster shut down of my computer I dont want to get stuck in one of those situations where they send back another faulty laptop and I get shitted out of 3000 dollars. Plus why not get a Dell when I am MOSTLY gaming. I have also come to consider that in college I'll be taking my laptop to class and with Sager's 1 hour of battery life compared to Dell's 2.5, and it's weight, it has led me to believe that the Dell would be better for me.

Any suggestions? Think I should send in the Sager for a refund and grab a Dell while the deals are hot? If worst comes to worst and I HATE the dell, I can always send THAT back and get another Sager. But honestly after having this for a while I have noticed I could indeed use a smaller more portable and less heated, if a little more expensive, laptop.

Any suggestions appreciated, am I taking the right path?

Thanks for your time and help in this situation.
