First Impressions:
When i first saw the 9880 i found it be HUGE, alot more tahn what i expected and pictures don't actually show that. My friend had the lappy charged 50% and to my amazment i didn't use the laptop for maybe 30 min and the battery became about 13% and i was just getting the lan workled up and checking the media center. I put music loud and it went 5% after 1 min. Obviously not battery efficient. When i first brought it for family to see they said ur crazy to get such thing, it's huge and not beautiful. They said after a couple of years u'll get same poewr with 2 times less hugness ! well i'd like that to happen now and i seriously began to think to get the XPS GEN2 after a couple of days purchasing this thing

Hottness:
Now i find it to go HOT HOT and HOT. Now i know that i read a lot of ppl say the computer idles at 54c and etc etc ...but i DIDN'T actually expect it to be this hot ! now my temps are normal as i write this and temps are: the 60GB 7200 rpm is 55c the 40gb 5400 is 53c and the tem is 49c. hehe believe it or not i have the lappy on my legs stretched, but i put this little puffed lion puppy to separate my legs and the hot exterir from the bottom. I first switched this lappy an hour and a 30 min ago but my legs wee slowly getting hotter and dhotter till i found that lion beside me, hehe i didnt want to move and get a big book to put as memebers of this forums are doing when the 9880 becomes hot !

Noise:
This is one heck of a quiet one. Now there were issues with noise as i remember with the 9860. but this is quite quiet ! hehe. It goes hot and there is slight fan spinning but i hardly hear it. Don't know when is the real noise tho, i played BF2 and the fanss kicked in a little bit faster, but the computer temps were as they are now.

Screen:
The WUXGA glossy is wonderful. i really Reccomed it to every1. im sitting behine a huge window with sunlight behind me and all i do is flip the screen backward or forward to eliminate the reflection angle ! and i like when it reflects it can be like a mirror so that i can fix my hair :P. Now the letters on screen are good for my eysight, not big ones but fine. Tho i like to bring the resolution down 1650x1080 but the writing becomes fuzzy a bit, maybe some1 can help me with that? The creen came with a plastic cover infront of it to prevent scratches, cool thing, but didnt keep it as i wanted to c the screen i bought

Sound:
Sound is good on this machine and the subwoofer is kina cool, it makes the keyboard letters shake a bit when i put my hand to feel it, it gives a nice sound boost. Tho i wish the sound to be louder coz on full it isnt that loud and i thought 4 speakers could fill a room with their power

Power brick:
This this one heck of a HUGEEE brick !! not excesively said ! it's as big as my foot heh (im a 45 US sized). Now it alsoo ran very hot as i was playing yesterday and it is now after 2 hours of surfing. the brick has a green led to tell u if electricity is passing, good to know that.

Other:
WEbcame is nice and working. The picture details is gr8 and it's as any other seperate webcam u'd buy. The mic first got me crazy i thot it didnt work when i tuned it in msn messenger conversation i had to scream first time to make it detect sound but then it went alright, i still have to make audio conversation to check it out *edit* i made an audiio conversation and i got to say the mic sucks i had to be 1 inch away from the screen mic to be heard!. The media center got me a bit confused. I have those little IR things with the IR reciever that came and i still don't know what they are and didnt find the media center manuel helpful (help?). The remote is kinda hevier than any normal remote. The battery certainly takes alot time to charge and takes a lot less to get decharged ! i think it took about 3 hours to full charge, not sure about exact time tho. Burned first dvd backup and it was smooth and fast no problems.

Knock on wood ppl !! this system is gr8, tho i get annoyed of this heat and have to buy a wireless mouse and keyboard. Wow im fkin sweating now from my legs ! not good. Well that's it for now. I WON'T BE DOING any overclocking or benchmarking !! i'd like to keep it as it is.

EDIT may 20 2007:
Ok so about a month ago the ac adapter died and it sint working no more. Got it fixed for a while but it kept going off. im getting one from internet soon. Warrantec is of no help coz im going to order it directly to me without their annoying requests of reports and etc. Oh and the paint has worn off on sides of touchpad and one button wont stick back. i think thats it meanwhile, it has been so long since i came to these forums.

Here are pictures for the anxious ppl :P

Problems Thus Far
So I'm about a month into having had the 5760. Love to say it's been trouble-free, but that's not the case. Minor annoyances more than anything else, really.

Screen
Had one instance of the unit's screen not waking up. I have it set so that the screen turns off after x amt of time. No problem, right? Riiiiiiiight. Got up one morning, moved the cursor around and generally the machine comes right up. Not this time. Nothing happened. I clicked around and it was making noises like it was running normally- I just couldn't see what I was doing. Shut down, restart. Works fine now. Harbinger of Doom? Don't know. Maybe nothing. Will see in time, apparently.

Scroll Pad
Set to super-sensitive and a pain in my BUTT. No way of altering the settings as they're all grayed out in the options area. Haven't reinstalled the drivers or checked for updates. According to a specific thread on this, Sager has been unable to help with this problem so far. Not going to bang my head against a brick wall quite yet over it. Going to see how it reacts to Vista and then start screaming.

Card Reader
Recently bought a new camera (Nikon D80), therefore I needed a new SD card to go with it. 4gb SD card arrived the other day. Formatted it in my D80 and it worked fine. However, the Dell 9300 wouldn't read it- said it needed to be formatted. So I formatted it in the 9300. Worked fine in the D80, the Dell 9300 and my Canon IXY 700. No problem, right? Wrong. Tried to offload pictures yesterday into the 5760 off of the 4gb card. Won't read it. Reads my other SD cards just fine (256mb Mini + adapter, 512mb + adapter, 1gb Micro + adapter), so I don't know what to say. Haven't had time to check Sager's site for updates. Figure that's next. If that doesn't work... well, dunno. Once again, see if Vista changes anything driver-wise. Plugging the D80's cable into the 5760's USB port allows it to read the 4gb SD card just fine. Go figure.

The pachage tiself weighed 25 lbs. didn't weight on a scale yet but i'll do it later.
I did benchmark using 3dmark 05 and i did get a bit less than 4000 i think using the 7.62 drivers. This is low if im not mistaken.
Well if i can help in any other way ask it i'll try my best
post #8 of 22
Wow that is low, was the power plugged in and not running off of the battery? Maybe turn off some background programs and restart the computer then try it. What about defragginging it?

no it was on AC but im worried smth is wrong in my card coz i did do it more than one test and they all gave less tahn 4000 :S. Also when i play Half life 2 on max resoution and max settings it freezes after a couple of minutes and i have to push button all the way to shut down, this problem didnt use to exist ! but if i play on lower res it's ok.
I tried different drivers and same thing but the newest 80s drivers seem to be unstable.

now my 9880 Idles at 58 degree !
Umm maybe you have the GDDR3 card as opposed to the Ultra?
4000 on 3D/05 would be about correct for the older card?

i have to add that the gpu is pain in the ass... problems come and go. especially is heats 2 much and blue screen then comes. Atrifacting will follow that over heating.

Man, there is something wrong with your 9880.

I have the same system you do and, other than having the mobo replaced, it works flawlessly.

When I run Half Life 2, I have everything maxxed out. Max res, max water detail, 4 x anti aliasing, 8 x anistropic filtering, even have it on widescreen. And, I just recently upgraded to the high definition texture pack.

Never a stutter. Frame rate is buttery smooth and solid.

There is something wrong with your 9880 or, you're running it in a really warm room?

My cpu is only a 3.0ghz (new 6 series 2mb cache/64 bit processor), 1 gig of ram, same exact gpu as you.

I'd open up that thing and see if your card is seated properly, if the fan is working, and if the airflow path is being blocked. If all that is good...definitely call Sager.

I’m sorry to hear you are having problems.

My 9880 is due to ship tomorrow and hopefully I wont have the same issues.

Give me till this weekend and I’ll let you all know.

I play BF2, HL2 and world of warcraft

u'll find it indeed stunning ... I dnt get bothered a lot by the heating gpu a lot ..wt i hate is that the point wen it freezes and i have to shut down the 9880 from the button, and this always causes loss of data of wt i was doing and causes checdisk to come :S...
Like today wen i first put BF2 everything high and 4x antilising, the game froze like 20 min after playing while this didnt happen b4 on same settings so i had to shut down the computer from the button(it froze and artifacting appeared).
after booting I started BF2 one more time and i said to put a less effort on the card so i disabled antilising and played for hours without a glitch. I see this going and coming, i have requested from warranty to check it ..im still on that.

I'm having the same problems on my 9880 (see sig)
  • Updated my drivers
  • got about 25 percent free space on the main drive,
  • defraged
  • double checked all the nvidia settings making sure that they were all set to best performance
  • made sure all the settings were switched over to home use
  • optimized the core clock and memory clock settings
  • set the profile settings to 3dmarks06

Guess what? THE BEST SCORE I GOT WAS UNDER 1000!!

I guess my curiosity killed my comp with all the 3dmarks testing cause it went into standbye mode one day and the monitor never came back on.

I sent it in a week ago should here more about it tommorow

Good Luck with yours man.
