Acer Ferrari 4000 Impressions - Page 3

Yeah the mouse is odd... It seems like there should be an off button. I don't thin k I'm blind enough to miss it. It doesn't come out off standby super easy... has to move a bit or have a button clicked. The battery life seems pretty good so far so it shouldn't be much of a problem when travelling.

Tech - I'm a little unfamilar with undervolting - does lowering the voltage lower the performance, such as underclocking? Or is it lowering the voltage to the lowest possible setting to keep the same performance?

thanks for the review! I'm close to buying a ferrari of my own - if this model only had the 1280x800 glossy screen I'd be sold. If anyone knows when one of these will arrive I'd be much obliged.

Hi all. I just picked up this notebook. There IS a dvi port on the back as this picture indicate.

And, about the screen - it absolutely DOES have the SAME SPARKLE as the Asus Z71V and whatever Dell has it. I repeat, it DOES have the sparkle (i have both Asus z71v and Acer 4005 in my hand)

Hey techn9ne,

You don't by any chance have Sims2 laying around to test rather it will work? I know as far as the specs, the x700 should not be of problem, however my experience so far with Maxis and drivers, are less than desired. I am looking into purchasing the Ferrari for my mother which is a heavy Sims play'r.

Because they use the same screens as Asus, Dell etc....

As far as Ferrari purchase goes I am glad I didn't wait for it... there are definetely better notebooks for that price. I wish I could get my hands on Samsung X50

undervolting does not decrease performance

umm... from what i've read about how screen sparkle looks and all the negative things about it I don't really think the Ferrari 4000 has it... either it's hardly noticable or I don't know what I'm looking for... it looks like a regular matte screen to me. So unless all matte screens look the same...

I saw the Asus Z71v screen and that did have some kind of wierd effect on the whites and greens... but my Ferrari doesn't look like that... so I dunno what you're talking about.

if you don't know what it is and satisfied with your screen, then don't try finding it so you can just get disapointed...

Are you saying your unit has the glossy screen? Where did you purchase it from, which country are you in?

availability in DK?

Hi,

is the Ferrari available in DK already? How much DKK is it? Does it come with the Danish or English software?

For 200$ i could purchase the XP pro 64bit OEM(With a keyboard or something like it)...
This means that i could potentially buy it with the XP Home(32bit) edition, run it for a few month(perhaps experiment with a "borrowed" XP Pro 64bit) and then Buy the XP pro 64bit edition when all the drivers are out. That way i would get both a XP Home and an XP Pro 64bit for the same price as the Acer Ferrari 4005 XP Pro(32bit)...

when you go to http://global.acer.com/products/note..._notebooks.htm and then scroll down to Ferrari 4000 (down at the bottom) you will see that there will be different versions of the Ferrari, some will come with the so called CristalBrite (glossy screen) in WXGA, some will come with the regular/matte screen with the WSXGA+; also different processors ML-37 or ML-30 can be in the machine; same with the HDD it can be 80 or 100 HDD; as well as the 3 different software versions: XP Pro x64, XP Pro 32bit, XP Home 32bit.

Yes the 4005 model should be available in the first 5-10 shops online.
The two cheapest shops i have found them is: http://www.notebooksalg.dk/produkt.h...=Acer&gruppe=7 price: 15.228 DKK and www.easyshopping.dk price: 15.390 DKK...
It doesnt say if its Danish og english software(But some pages mentions XP Home/Pro DK as an upgrade - so im guessing its english).

Questions re: 4000

Thanks for the review. Very helpful. Getting ready to pull the trigger on a 4000. Do you think it is a little odd that Acer doesn't include Windows 64? Are you going to upgrade? I understand that Acer will upgrade you after the fact at a good price and will provide support. (Thanks ScubaSteve87).

I am not a gamer. I see that you tested the unit with word processing. Does it fly through that even though the graphic card is not being pushed through that application. Was the text to small at the screen's native resolution.

Do you think this machine is overkill for a non-gamer (speed, price).

Are you into quality of keyboards? If so, how would you rate the feel of this keyboard and the location of the keys?

If you were going to use this notebook for business, do you see a case that is classy or is it too "gameish." From the photos it doesn't seem to look over-the-top. Maybe the 3400 does, but this seems to look "interesting" if nothing else.

Thanks.

Chuck

I think the reason Acer didn't include xp 64bit is b/c the lack of drivers for that os.
