Design:
This is my first laptop I have ever owned. But from what I can tell from other laptops such as my friends and the schools laptops, the design is very nice. It is slick with style. I personally got tired of seeing so many black laptops that this looked very appealing to me. The Asus power button with the blue light around it looks nice too. The external buttons for various needs and the LED light indicaters make this laptop useful. I may not take full advantage of them, but I sure love that it has it.

The laptop is made up of plastic and is obviously not going to be as trong as the Acer Ferrari 4005 which has carbon fiber material. It looks very well-built, and I think it could withstand a 6 foot drop to the floor...not that I am going to try it. The keyboard is very different than my current desktop keyboard which I am very use to. But I think I can get use to it. I notice I make more typing errors when using it, but it is only because of my lack of usage of this notebook.

I feel no flex anywhere on the laptop. Although the bottom, when I was trying to open the RAM compartment, it was difficult and I was unable to open it. I will seek help later. I was rying to do this because I was thinking of adding another gig of RAM. The laptop seems very plasticy but a more stronger plastic.

Screen: The screen seems as though it is well made with a slight "sparkle screen" effect. Anyways, i believe you only notice it if you think about it. The new resolution is very different for me from a normal CRT monitor screen, but I guess I can get use to it. The sparkle effect isn't too disturbing. This screen is a 15.4" WSXGA+ screen with a resolution of 1680x1050. The ambient light sensor(ALS) is a very useful component of this laptop. This is a widescreen, and I find it very useful with all the space I am given. I have found no dead pixel yet. The screen is simply amazing

Dimensions/weight: The dimensions of this laptop are pretty big if your use to smaller notebooks. Maybe because my dad has a 12" notebook that he always uses. The documented dimension for this laptop is: 14” x 10.75” x 1.38” and weight approx 6.5lbs. I have no trouble carrying it around at all. It is the weight of a normal textbook for school. The bag that came with the system fits the laptop perfectly.

Performance: The system's performance is alot better than my current system with a P4 2.6GHz@ 3.14GHz, 512mb of corsair XMS DDR-400 RAM, Asus p4p800 motherboard, and an Asus 9600xt video card. I will post benchmarks when I can later.

Video: I was using the winamp Milk drop visulaization. When you switch to fullscreen, you can hear the music stutter for half a second, but then its fine. I have not played any games on it yet, but am waiting to do so once I have time. I installed the 77.62 driver with the help of smilepak. I am getting average 110 fps on Counter Strike:Source servers I'm getting 4650 3DMark03 right now...with this driver, i got 1837 3DMarks for 3DMark05

Heat/Fan: The heat is hot coming from the bottom if it is on your lap. I used the undervolting method in the Centrino Hardware Control and at 800MHz it is at .700v running about 40-43 degrees C at idle and 43-48 degrees C at 100% CPU. At maximum at 1.73GHz, I have the voltage at 1.084v. The system runs at 54-56 degrees C when idle and 55-58 degrees C when at 100% CPU. I can hardly notice the fan. The only real noise I hear is from the DVD+RW drive when it is running.

Battery: I am quite dissapointed at the battery life. The most battery life at the lowest settings is 3 hours and 15 minutes. Nothing near the battery life Asus stated at 6.5 hours. Oh I wish that would be true...

More updates soon...

Nice little review there...only I may suggest you put the "updates" in the "notebook review and benchmark" forum..
you can most likely get up to 3:45 hours if you dim down your screen
nice review

I belive the 6.5 it is talking about is completely lowest dim setting, no opical drive attached and DUAL battery?
I think the 6.5 hours Asus is talking about is probably turning off wireless, no optical drive, screen as dim as possible, and the laptop was just turned on and left on with 1 battery, with no browsing or any activity, just simply a rundown test.

Nice review! You have EXACTLY the same specs I was looking at, from processor speed to HD type/size

I'd be interested in hearing any further comments once you've had time to 'break it in' (figureatively speaking of course!!) Otherwise, gratz on what looks to be nice lappy

on a side note.. pyro_dragun... you have 666 posts!! *brings out the garlic, crucifixes, holy water, and a mortiig beater of torture *

Thanks for the little review, I'm psyching myself up to buy one of these babies ... not totally sure yet, but getting more and more confident. I would be ordering the 1.86 processor, the 60gb 7200rpm drive, and the dvd/cd-rw drive. I am still not sure whether I should wait a month or two to see if either the price is going to drop or something better is going to emerge. HOWEVER, thank you for the review, was helpful.
