Wireless Notebook Card

I just recently went wireless (only dial up available before)...and I was trying to get signal further away from my router. I have a new Dell Inspiron 6000 and the wireless card installed within it will pick up anywhere from 2 to 5Mpbs which is slow but fine for what I need to get done. But, I run into a problem when I try to get signal on other computers with a 802.11 g Linksys Wireless Notebook Adapter Card (I am using a Linksys Wireless G Router too). Are there cards out there that would be able to pick up the signal like my laptop?? (Linksys Wireless Notebooks Adapter SRX??) Thanks...

How far away from your router are you placing the laptop and the desktop? Line of sight is an important factor for wirless connections for longer distances.

I don't know how far away it is exactly, but it is outside my house (so it is a ways) But I am not that concerned with getting a fast speed...If I could get the 5.5 Mbps (out of 100 Mbps- that we get on the desktop that is wired to the router) through a wireless card I would be happy...

You could get an antenna booster and blast that babies signal all the way to Milwaukee or London even......

I use a Proxim ORiNOCO gold card. It's b/g and has an external antenna port....let's just say I can reach pretty far. :-)

Hah. Yeah, if I ever want free Internet I just walk around my neighborhood and see all th e wireless networks I can pick up. Most people don't even have encyption on their networks so my lappy automatically picks up the signal.

There's no point though because we have DSL but still, it's fun to do!

Or even do you think it is easier and/or cheaper to just get a better wireless card or antenna booster?

You might consider a solution such as this which employs a second wireless router as the wireless client instead of an individual wireless client access device (PCI, PCMCIA, USB, etc).

The benefit is much more power and single strength as the router is externally powered.

Good luck.

i sold one of these on ebay...tested it with my uniwill 258kao, how it stacks up with my internal Gygabite GN-WPEAG.......pretty nice

and wait...if you have G, and only get 5.5Mbps....how far are you? I get roughly 50mbps when i am outside the house, all 54 when i am in. I use a netgear router. though this doesn't matter much since my cable is only 4mbps

I am trying to go about 80-100 ft outside...but the thing is that I have aluminum siding on my house- and going inside a motorhome...so if I go closer I get about 34 outside, but only 5.5 in there...so i am pretty much just looking for something that would pick up the same as my Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN Mini-PCI Card
