My battery has been dead for a year or so. Won't last more than 5 minutes. But last week I needed to check my email quickly, so tried to boot on battery, and the computer shutdown while WinXP was loading.
Ok, attach AC cord, start it up again. Uh-oh. It's now running slowly (seeminly whenever it tries to access the harddrive) and won't boot. The normally quick white and black progress bar takes forever. Eventually I get a weird error. If I try safe mode it blue screens. I then use the WinXP CD to do Recovery mode, and there I run CHKDSK /r.
YAY! It found and repaired an error (after a LONG time running) and now I can get back in WinXP....for a few days. Now it's worse! If I start normally it'll blue screen when it's on the low-res WinXP boot-up screen. I can sometimes get in Safe Mode, but usually not for long...1 minute, 5-10 minutes, whatever. It eventually blue screens and reboots. And often if it reboots when I try to start normally, it'll do that whole computer-running-insanely slowly thing with disc errors, and I AGAIN have to do the CHKDSK fix.
So now I don't know what to do? Is this bad memory? A bad harddrive? This is painful...I use my laptop for my work, etc. Suggestions?
